It didn't occur to me to mark the carpet when I had everything disassembled for the install, so here's my question: Has anyone on the forum installed similar coilovers AND cut a hole in the carpet behind the roll bar to make it easier to adjust the coilovers without having to remove the rearmost carpet?

I left the rear carpet piece out for a week or so while I experimented but I decided that once I got the firmness figured out, the odds of me wanting/needing to adjust the ride firmness in the future would be pretty remote.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just put coilovers in my 2004 cabriolet. They are adjustable by turning a **** at the top center of the coilover. The fronts are easy to get to, but the rears are hidden by carpet behind the rollbar! It didn't occur to me to mark the carpet when I had everything disassembled for the install, so here's my question: Has anyone on the forum installed similar coilovers AND cut a hole in the carpet behind the roll bar to make it easier to adjust the coilovers without having to remove the rearmost carpet? That's the area where the convertible top stows. Any pictures or diagrams would be helpful. When I finish cutting holes in my carpet, I plan to take pictures in case others want to do the same thing, but If I'm not the first, and someone else has a template or pictures (or lessons learned!) that would be great. I'm considering using a hole saw (drill attachment) to make the holes. Other alternative ideas will be welcome! Thanks!

POST 2Original post

I debated doing this for my coupe. I left the rear carpet piece out for a week or so while I experimented but I decided that once I got the firmness figured out, the odds of me wanting/needing to adjust the ride firmness in the future would be pretty remote. At least on the coupes, the carpet piece is really easy to remove anyway so I figured that modifying the carpet wouldn't be worthwhile. If the cabriolet's carpet isn't tough to remove and/or if you don't plan on adjusting the firmness very often, I'm not sure I'd venture cutting the piece.

You're making a good point as far as the coupe is concerned. I may just follow your advice. My reasoning was that in the cabriolet, you have to put the top into service mode to remove the carpet, and since that is dead space back there, nobody would pay attention to the hole, and it would make the shocks easy to adjust. I may just take the time to remove the carpet and do my trial and error adjustments with the carpet out, and see it that's good enough to get a long term set up. Thanks!
