So, I started to change the spark plugs and pulled out the coils and spark plugs on passenger side only to realize that they were changed with latest 997 coils and new spark plugs.

I use a Vespa scooter for that because my Porsche is a bit too wide for the sidewalk.

This car is not susceptible to IMS failure, as the original ball‑bearing assembly has been replaced with the bearing design the engine should have had from the outset.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm hoping I get some feedback from some Canadian subscribers. I am contemplating a spring sale of my beloved 996 that I have owned since 2018. I have concluded that I just don't have the opportunity to drive it enough and I'm struggling to justify keeping it when for the last 8 years I have averaged 1000 km's annually. The intent of this car was to be used during good weather months as a typical fun car combined with commuting to the office. Reality has become that traffic is so bad in Toronto, absolutely no interest in commuting to work in it and fun drives have become few and far between as the traffic has just taken the fun out of it.
So, what's my car worth? Here is a description of it.
2003 Porsche 911. Manual transmission.
Black on black. No accidents. All original paint. Perfect interior. Car is lowered on H&R springs to ROW height. 79000 KMS.
In 2018, at 71000 km, car was PPI'ed with a leakdown and borescope. Came back clean, hence why I purchased it.
In late 2018, within a week of purchase the following was done to it:
AOS
Water Pump/Coolant/Thermostat
RMS
Clutch/Pressure plate
IMS replaced with The Solution installed
In 2022,
New Porsche coolant tank, updated cap
Rein Motor Mounts
AOS to coolant plastic connector replaced with metal one
In 2023,
New ignition switch
In 2024
New Continentals all around.
Annual oil changes.
Comes with 2 keys, all manuals. Even have the factory plastic bag for laying the tire in backseat during a flat. Everything works as it should - AC, cooling fans etc.
Google says Retail is $38K to $45K. Trade in is $20K to $25K.
Opinions?
Nice Carrera. And thumbs up for the Moosehead lager! As a fellow GTA'er, I understand all too well about the traffic, and I try my best to go on as many organized cruises/rallies to Kawartha's/Muskoka's as possible with some local club groups.
I would say, based on your description, you might be able to get close to $50K CAD.
Are you looking to replace this with something else?
The market for niche sports cars in Canada varys widely, and consumer sentiment lately has been lower. Some questions to ask yourself: What are current asking prices in your area for similar cars? How long are they on the market for? What is your appetite to wait for the right buyer? How do you plan to advertise it? Are you a member of the local PCA?
Getting top dollar for your car will depend heavily on exposure and interest. Knowledgable buyers may want to get into the weeds on maintenance but many others won't put a lot of value on the updates listed. Good luck with the sale.
I'm not sure what I'll do next actually. There was a time when you could actually get on the roads and have an enjoyable drive. I'm approaching retirement and will likely purchase another fun car that I can keep at the cottage (I don't have a garage at the cottage) for spirited drives where there is no traffic. I hate the thought of keeping my 996 outside on dirt for extended periods at the cottage.
I'm still on the fence about this one. I'm going to spend the remainder of the winter thinking about it. This car still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it,
WHEN NOT SITTING IN TRAFFIC.
I enjoy working on it. There's threads about me doing the coolant tank and motor mounts. I do whatever maintenance like oil changes and tranny fluid changes myself.
I'm in business case territory trying to rationalize an entirely emotional decision to keep the car. This is an unmolested car with IMHO all the necessary upgrades to address some of the 996 shortcomings. Only thing the car really needs is a new battery. I have a 2017 Porsche battery in it. It's almost 9 years old and should be changed. I have service records for it and it did not show a spark plug or coil change. So, I started to change the spark plugs and pulled out the coils and spark plugs on passenger side only to realize that they were changed with latest 997 coils and new spark plugs. Weren't even dusty or dirty. I figure must have been done as part of dealer prep when I bought the car at PFAFF.
I had a single car garage at my previous home. I used to park the 996 on top and a Wrangler underneath it. Once you have a lift, you get so used to it, that although I can't stack 2 cars (I could stack 2 911's), I had the lift installed before moving in to make maintenance easier on the car. Car is usually parked on the ground over the summer.
In the winter, I do keep my snow blower, shovels and garbage/recycle cans under the car so I don't have to go outside to dump garbage - I'm allergic to the cold lol.
Most 996 models available in Canada tend to be convertibles and/or automatics, and many of them remain on the market for extended periods. As a member of the Upper Canada Region Porsche Club, I would likely list the car there first. I am not particularly concerned about prospective buyers scrutinizing the details, as the vehicle has been exceptionally well maintained during my ownership.
The primary maintenance-related value add is the IMS Solution. This car is not susceptible to IMS failure, as the original ball‑bearing assembly has been replaced with the bearing design the engine should have had from the outset. The work was performed by an experienced, formerly certified installer, and all receipts are available. I also retained the original bearing, which was still in excellent condition, as I saw no benefit in returning it to LN Engineering.
Here's a pic of the Solution:
Buyers in the know will appreciate the IMS Solution, those looking for Porsche ownership based on the brand will not. It's a tough discussion with potential buyers who don't understand the benefits and only compare on price. Hopefully someone in the Upper Canada Region is either looking or knows someone who is looking and will appreciate the car for what it is.
We sound similar and so do our cars. Mine is a 2002 C2 6sp. 130,000kms. Seal grey / black. Same upgrades and maintenance as you. Nicer wheels though! I’ve put about 12,000 klicks on it over 12 years. I constantly wonder why I keep it, then I go out and drive it at over 4000 rpm.
Its. Just. Too. Fun.
But, I’m in Halifax, and live next door to a whole bunch of coast winding roads without your OPP keeping things, uh, safe. I don’t get stuck in downtown traffic in my car like you do. I use a Vespa scooter for that because my Porsche is a bit too wide for the sidewalk.
To the point at hand. Nice mileage helps a bunch. 35 to 40 CAD. I think if we drive them down the Appalachian trail once they pass 25 years old they will be worth the same in US dollars if they were sold somewhere there in the lower 48.
And there in lies my justification for not selling it…just quite yet.
