Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I'm in the process of updating my shift **** and boot as well as repairing the oddments tray hinge. I have the shift **** that does not have the set screw. After searching how to remove the ****, I wasn't a big fan of what I was seeing. Most of the threads involve grabbing the **** directly with your hands or using two screwdrivers in parallel to pull for dear life. I thought surely there must be a better and safer way. I basically created a mechanical advantage by cutting a slot in a piece of plywood. 3/4 inch thick plywood works perfectly. Since I used a jigsaw, I made a V shape at the end of the slot which works great to get the shaft of the shifter really snug. As far as the length I used, I would guess it's 2 1/2 to 3 feet although shorter would also work fine. The force I had to apply to pop it off was very minimal. It was really easy.

POST 3Original post

I made the exact same "tool" to remove the shift **** on my 914. As you say, this method works great and is much safer on the car. An excellent and simple tip for everyone.

POST 4Original post

I just wanted to say thank you for this. I didn't use this method, but I spent an hour trying to find a set screw or locking collar and here I find that the insanity I was experience was due to rapid misinformation.

POST 5Original post

For the mentally impaired, could you take a photo closer to the shift **** so the tool's use would be more obvious! TIA

POST 6Original post

What, you’re telling me I don’t have to pull like hell and smack myself right in the face when the **** releases? I’d also like to see more photos of the business end.

POST 7Original post

Leverage is an amazing thing... Physics 101... :-)

POST 8Original post

I was looking for the best place to share this info. For those struggling to remove the shift ****, here is another option that doesn't risk any damage to the interior of the car. Clamp against the shifter housing, resting on the trans tunnel. Depending on the clamp height, use a small piece of wood, then apply leverage.
