I have replaced the pads on the solenoids holding the cam chains and am understanding that a specific amount of tension needs to be on the timing chains when making final timing settings.

In Jake's engine rebuild class we used the Porsche special tool which sets a specific tension.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have read some posts on other forums that ended fairly inconclusively. I am working to install the heads and after fully reading the next step realized that I do not have Porsche Magic Tool 9599. I have replaced the pads on the solenoids holding the cam chains and am understanding that a specific amount of tension needs to be on the timing chains when making final timing settings. I am not in a position to buy those additional 3 tools. Some people say they aren't needed. And you can just manually fill the tensioners by dunking them and pressing them in and out to fill them. Thus applying the correct amount of pressure. Does anyone have any specific info regarding this? Or do I need to save for another couple months to get these other tools? Thank You.

Heading to bed for the night. Hopefully I have a more solid grasp in the AM,

POST 3Original post

I didn't use those when I did my engine (3.6) as there was no mention of them in the manual. Looks like you have a MK1 - maybe it's a different procedure with the 5-chain engine.

POST 4Original post

Just search. There are conflicting views. But it is easy to make a DIY tool.I did.Just one example http://986forum.com/forums/performan...rs-timing.html

POST 5Original post

In Jake's engine rebuild class we used the Porsche special tool which sets a specific tension. The purpose is to add tension that the chain will see normally when the engine is running. With that in mind, you can estimate how much force is needed given the oil pressure and the round surface area of the pistons of the tensioners. I would say 20 to 30lbs.
