Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hit the rev limiter on my 996 mk2 and immediately developed a ticking noise that turned into an intermittent clanging. No loss in performance. I quickly shut it down and trailered it to my shop. I will be putting it up on the lift tomorrow and pulling the filter and sump cover to start investigating. I replaced the IMS bearing last year. There are 54,000 miles on the car. Anyone care to guess what I'll find as the problem???

POST 2Original post

I predict unrelated, especially if you were just pushing up to redline as opposed to a botched downshift. I think the rev limiter is going to prevent damage. Not saying your engine isn't damaged, just that it wasn't running it up to the rev limiter that caused it - the problem was going to occur anyway. As for a guess as to what it is, has your waterpump ever been changed?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Waterpump is original. I'd be so happy if that's all it is.

Unless the clanging noise strongly suggests an internal engine problem dropping the sump plate is not the first thing I'd do. You can certainly drop the filter housing and check for scary bits of metal/debris just to be safe. I'd look to the accessory drive for some problem there and kcattorney beat me to the water pump.
