Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Looking into joining the club, I've just driven a 1998 996, going to get a ppi done, but wanted to get some expert opinions. it's done 72K Miles and never had a clutch done (to his knowledge). The clutch was quite high and firm, so from reading it looks like it needs to be done. So my intent is to buy and get the clutch/ims/rms done all at the same time. However when driving it, i noticed an extra fairly noisy rattle in 1st gear. Actually sounded like an engine rattle, but disappears in every other gear. Owner thought it might just be the clutch but wasn't sure. Doing some searching i couldn't really find anything obvious or common. Since it was only in first gear (generally taking off) is it possible that gear has broken teeth, will need a trans rebuild. or is this a direct symptom of the clutch/flywheel on the way out? (why only in first?)

POST 2Original post

Does it have a LWFW? I was scratching my head for a while over a rattle when I had the pedal half way out. Turns out the car has an aasco lwfw and it's a common side effect.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not that i or the owner knows of. He's unsure if the clutch has ever been done so unsure if the previous owner did something. Would LWFW noise only occur in 1st gear?

POST 4Original post

I only hear my rattle in first with the clutch pedal 1/4-1/2 out. Does the rattle get faster as engine rpm increases?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeh follows engine rpm, clutch all the way released.

POST 6Original post

Ashai had a release fork pivot failure that caused the release fork to make contact with the end of the diaphragm spring 'fingers' on his pressure plate. He could tell you what to look for if this is the case...

Noises are impossible to diagnosis -- even guess at -- with no audio. But I can tell you there are no missing transmission gear teeth. If there were the rest of the teeth would be ripped out in no time and the car wouldn't move at least in 1st gear. An experienced Porsche tech can tell you with a high confidence level what the noise means. Could be a bad clutch loose disc or worn and the rivets are touching the flywheel and pressure plate and the clutch is grabby. Only happens in 1st because that is the gear during which the clutch gets slipped to get the car moving.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for that, yeah just trying to get as much info as possible, he's mentioned he's had this sound for a long time, (since he bought the car from the last owner) apparently, gives me a little more confidence this isn't a super expensive fix. Will bring to a porsche tech to check it out properly.
