The wallpaper can be changed but only via usb tethering, which doesn�t work for my iPhone or for my usb thumb drive.

Crutchfield definitely has the parts (Metra), but I'd suggest you go with OEM parts instead (check suncoastparts.com) and use the Porsche double DIN brackets.

For the amp, you definitely could use the Bose amp and speakers, but if it's a MOST system you'll need an adapter.

I was very eager to replace the aftermarket and dated kenwood deck on my 99� 996. I also had some stiffening in the shifts for reverse and second gear.
I purchased a Sony AX4000 on Crutchfield and separately the Porsche shifter adjustment tool.
I have a friend who�s an excellent hobby mechanic and we pulled the shifter and center console out, as well as the old stereo and all the trim.
I love the Sony unit - except for the fact that it doesn�t seem to tether via usb or connect to usb devices to update wallpaper. The sound and screen and fit really are amazing.
With respect to the shifting - I�d suggest everyone use the tool and adjust their shifter. Mine clearly needed it (it is a 25 year old car after all). It shifts like butter again.
Looks great... I have the Sony AX6000 head unit. It blends into the factory interior much better than other head units. The wallpaper can be customized on the AX6000.
Double-check that your thumb drive is formatted as FAT32, and if I remember correctly, only JPEG files smaller than ~5 megabytes were supported.

could you please elaborate on the AX6000 install process? Crutchfield website suggests that this HU will not fit 996, saying that 1) no dash kit available and 2) I will need an additional aftermarket amp for the 2ohm Bose speakers as the AX6000 is compatible only with 4 ohms speakers.

It sounds like you have a 996.2 with Bose so the install would different than my 996.1. Crutchfield definitely has the parts (Metra), but I'd suggest you go with OEM parts instead (check suncoastparts.com) and use the Porsche double DIN brackets.
