Taking the top off and loosening the bolt may help if the wrench was the problem, but be aware that if you loosen the bolt when the top is off, it changes the lateral position of the bolt.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, It appears my hardtop is sitting a little crooked. Its about 1/4" higher on the passenger side. Its fully seated. The hardtop did not come with the car (as evidenced by the different color). I believe it's always been like this. Is there an adjustment that can be made to level it out? This side is 1/4" higher than the drivers side. This side sits properly.

POST 2Original post

I know that the MK-I tops are adjustable. I'm guessing the MK-II tops are as well, though the hardware is different.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Where does that adjustment sit? On the receiver or on the hardtop itself?

POST 4Original post

Adjustment is at the receiver, I set both hard top on the 2 cars at 10mm spacing between the hard top and body of the car.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great news. Do you remember what tools you used? For the spacing, was it just trial and error, or is there a way to measure while you are making the adjustment?

POST 6Original post

It is trial and error, you don't want it so tight it rubs the paint off the car body, IIRC I want to say it was 2 open end wrenches 3/4 or 19mm to adjusts, its been a few years back when done.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you! I'm going to get them at least level with each other, then I'll try to get it down to 10mm as well.

POST 8Original post

This should help. There are measurement points in the first image and then the dimensions and tolerances for each point. Yes, the two large bolts that fit into the receiver need to be adjusted to fit to your car when the top came from another car. It helps to have a friend stand outside and check the measurements while you work the nuts from the inside. You will be happy when you get it right. I bought the Porsche manual for the convertible top from Pelican and very glad I did. It has come in handy several times.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19812503

In image #1, Figure #2, do you adjust the bolts at #2? It looks like #1 is what holds it all in place, and #2 is where you'd make a height adjustment.

POST 10Original post

Yes, #2 is your adjustment nuts, so using 2 wrenches to do the job, and 10mm clearance is a good number.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19813631

Yes, as JohnCA58 says, #2 is the one to adjust height using two wrenches allows you to set the height and then lock the adjustment in place. Was easy to do and satisfying because once you get it done, you never have to do it again.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update, this is what it looked like before I started. I was able to get the 15mm side down to about 12mm. After that, I ran out of nut space. I was able to do this with the hardtop still on the car. I imagine that if I take the top off, I'll have a lot more room to play. In any case, getting the one side down to about 12mm made a HUGE difference. It's now hard to see the difference with he naked eye. I'll make further adjustments when I have an opportunity to take the roof off.

POST 13Original post

You mean the nut ran all the way to the bottom of the bolt and you still had a 15mm gap or you ran out of space to get the wrench in there? Taking the top off and loosening the bolt may help if the wrench was the problem, but be aware that if you loosen the bolt when the top is off, it changes the lateral position of the bolt. If you do make adjustment with the top off, leave the bolt loose so it can reposition itself laterally in the receiver.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19843514

Sorry, i'm not at home (I'd take a picture to show you what I mean) The nut in the diagram is now touching the pin below it. I only had that much play. But I think when I take the roof off, I'll be able to adjust it more. And yes, with that nut all the way down to the pin, I still have 12mm of gap. Much improved, but not all the way there yet. Before After

POST 15Original post

OK, that's what I thought. I'm sure it looks a lot better, I know mine did when I finally made the adjustments.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19843829

Yeah, its night and day. Who would have though that 3mm would be that noticable!

POST 17Original post

I used to use a hardtop (on my alfa romeo spider but...) I had learned to always put the top on , on a sunny day, and to secure it relatively tightly but not too hard, and then to drive it for the day under the sun, and tighten it again. storage, especially vertically, can sometimes warp the fiberglass just slightly, and i found it was better to do than , when i first got it, how one wants to overtighten it while cold and warped. You will find it kind of settles together after a bit of time, and its even good to revisit it about a week later for final tightening to last the winter season. hopefully thats helpful.
