Suggestion · Original poster

It appears he had allowed a prospective buyer to test drive the car 2 weeks before and the buyer missed a shift and scored a range 2 over rev with 118 ignitions so about .3 sec above the 7,900 rev limiter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was looking at very nice 996 and had the owner run a ECU check. It appears he had allowed a prospective buyer to test drive the car 2 weeks before and the buyer missed a shift and scored a range 2 over rev with 118 ignitions so about .3 sec above the 7,900 rev limiter. It literally was 1 hour ago in the motor hours. There were about 4,500 ignitions in Range 1 which is really nothing over the 2300 hours of motor operating. Reading through all the past threads it is common to say things are safe if the over rev occurred 50-100 hours ago. This is literally 1 hour and only 0.3 sec into Range 2. Any salient thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated. This is otherwise great car and the seller is top notch. (Yes he is upset about it and kept the guys deposit.) Thanks, Tad

POST 2Original post

Yeah...never let a "prospective buyer" take a test drive alone.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Owner was with him but he was totally shocked and couldnt believe the idiot had done that. Tough lesson. Dont let anyone test drive without a serious discussion of what they can do and a larger deposit, plus a copy of their insurance. Evidently the guy punched it and then missed a shift. Owner had him shut it down and immediately drive back slowly.

POST 4Original post

If he missed a shift the computer should have shut it down. The issue is when down shifting from say 4th to 3rd and you accidentally hit 1st. Computer can't control that over rev.

POST 5Original post

Id pass on it. It may be fine, but why take the risk?
