Suspected cause

Assuming it shifts fine, I think the issue is due to the friction between the cable and the cable housing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as I know, original cables and bushings. Any thoughts one what is needed to refresh this so its back up to snuff? You Tube

POST 2Original post

First thing I would do is open it up to see if there is anything in the shifter mechanism that can be causing the slow return. Also, if you remove the ashtray/cubbie behind the window controls, you can see the cables and visually see if there are anything that can cause binding.

POST 3Original post

Assuming it shifts fine, I think the issue is due to the friction between the cable and the cable housing. You should check both ends, the shifter side and the transmission side.

POST 4Original post

You really need to get in there and asses the situation visually. Anything else is just guessing and in order to address the situation you'll need to open things up anyway. The boot pops off easily and then there's just a few screws - not hard at all. The stock shifter has plastic bushings which are known to wear out, which could be one reason for this.

POST 5Original post

There are bushings at the bottom of the shifter in the housing. Those bushings are worn out, broken, or have some deposit in them. Get the **** off, take the boot off, and inspect the shifter housing and bushings. It might be time to replace them.

POST 6Original post

The mechanics are really simple. it seems that either something is wedged, gunked up or sticky in the shifter OR the shifting linkage is tangled up somehow Looks like an easy fix. Good luck!
