Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All - I'm based up here in MA and it's starting to get pretty cold. My 996 is a third car so gets light use but I do plan to drive it when the roads are clear this winter. Question is what if anything should I do to prepare the car to sit for a few weeks at a time? I have a CTEK trickle-charger via cig lighter on it. Should I worry about anything else? Thanks so much!

POST 2Original post

I am in MA also with a 996 C2! I use a CTEK trickle charger and put a couple dryer sheets in the car to keep mice away. I don't drive the car at all in the winter and typically have not used a fuel stabilizer like Stabil if it's only sitting for 2/3 months but many people add that.

POST 3Original post

Inflating your tires to the max pressure to minimize flat spots is recommended. Premium gas should be good for six months but adding a bottle of Stabil is common. If non-ethanol gas is available get as close to a full tank as possible. For newer cars connecting directly to the battery is recommended because of time outs and restarts with power failures. You can buy after market battery monitors that send messages but a Wifi signal is needed for most. There are expensive after market batteries with built in reserves but if you have power not needed IMO. I put out glue traps for rodents. Do not be tempted to start and idle the car, it just adds moisture to the engine and exhaust. If you do drive makes sure its long enough to get oil up to operating temp. Not sure about MA, but PA has a storage category for car insurance that can save you a few $$. Many use an indoor dust cover.

POST 4Original post

Hail from Worcester (2000 996 C2). For "a few weeks at a time", I would only do the dryer sheets in the frunk, passenger compartment and engine. It's not long enough to impact tires. I will get mine out of hibernation when I am sure there is no road salt and the temp is comfortable. I just want to get it to operating temp. Late fall and spring is when I use Thechron for the fuel system. I use 93 octane fuel so I don't use a fuel preservative - I just fill the tank for the winter. Some good threads here on fuel additives and winter storage. Go to Google and search "Rennlist.com: winter storage" or whatever relevant term you want. I also use a trickle charger all year. If I think the car is in for an extended period, I'll use 0000 steel wool in the exhaust tips to keep the mice away. I have a few Victor traps set in the garage.

I use a trickle charger through the lighter all year long. If you want to spend the money, you can buy "flatstoppers" to roll up on. I store my car in the winter in a professional storage facility and they prefer to connect the trickle charger directly to the battery. The floor is heated so the tires don't get a flat spot. There are also no mice there, which is worth more than the storage costs.

Eastern MA, but looking for an excuse to drive the beast anytime, count me in as well!

POST 11Original post

Also count me in for a get together/ride once the weather gets warm. Would be nice to see a pack of 996s out on the road in the wild.
