Can I use these filters with the DI50, or do I need a long one?

Suggestion
The main reason for recommending the billet filter is to adjust for the use of thicker, XP6 or DI50 oils.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced oil filter cutter?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As a new proud owner of his first Porsche 911, I've gotten a 996 and am doing the maintenance myself. I found some grit in my oil filter after the IMS bearing was in bad shape 13k km ago - debris from this still resided in the oil pan. I've done so much research the past weeks that my head is about to spin off, and I got to the point where it seemed that unless you throw in 18k on LNE mods, your car is going to grenade within the next 100km. But I digress;
This spin-on oil adaptor thing I read about, it says you need it because the original holder has a sprung bypass valve. The modification seemed smart to me, until after 5 minutes or so I realized that my trusty old Volvo 850 spin-on filters have bypass valves too, simply internal. AFAIK, all spin-on filters have this. Sooooo then what is the point of the adapter? Did the designer have a brainfart, or am I missing something obvious?
The LN oil filter adapter allows for use of spin-on oil filters that do NOT have an internal bypass, like the original cartridge type filter. I have the spin-on adapter and use a Mobil M1-107 spin on filter. There are several other equivalent filters that do not have an internal bypass valve. Get it...use it...done.

Napa-1042 filters are what is used... or the equivalent...
Get the adapter... and the magnetic oil plug... and a filter cutter... you will be good to go!
Not to rain on the collective parade, but, the Napa Gold 1042 - which I have gotten my hands on - has a spring in the bottom still. I cut it open to check. The top collar can move around too. I guess this means the entire filter shifts in the case when overpressure presents itself, opening up at the top, thus it still has a bypass I think.
If it still has a bypass, then ROFL. The bypass is just located at the top, not the bottom?
Edit// It's right there, in Napa's own video! 1m52s into the video. It's got a bypass valve, just at the top! Nobody cared to check in all those years of this being thrown around as 'fact'? I mean, I might be wrong and the 1042 specifically could be a no-bypass filter I guess, but then why does it have a spring?

Interesting find. I don't have a spin on adapter myself, I kept the stock filter. I do use Bosch or equivalent brand cartridge filters with the top/bottom O-ring seals on the ends for better sealing. I also have 2x powerful high temperature capable magnets on the outside of the cartridge housing, they really work, when I did my last oil change after 5k miles I found the magnets had collected a tiny amount of ferrous spooge on them, my filter was spotlessly clean...
The spring in the bottom of the 1042 is not a bypass. It is what holds the whole assembly in the can tight. If you look at the lookup for the 1042 (97-04 Corvette), it clearly states that it has no bypass in the manufacturer specifications.
Don't confuse an internal bypass valve with a anti-drain back valve. Some of the cartridge type spin-on filters incorporate an anti-drain back valve. Pressure up, anti-drain back valve open. No pressure, anti-drain back valve closed.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced oil filter cutter? So I really have to spend $70 on a Longacre brand? Thanks.

Im not being sarcastic when I say this but once you cut is open and there is metal in there arent you doomed?
I want to find a part that does the oh well I will avoid the name or we could call the Porsche CashmanI want to find a part that Porsche Cashman does without it being so hot to the touch.
Question regarding the LN spin on filter adapter.
On the LN webpage for the adapter, it says
For track use, our Billet High Performance Oil Filter is required. But I cannot seem to find info on this Billet High Performance oil filter anywhere. My car sees the track. I ordered the Wix filter along with the adapter kit, but I want to be using the right filter here for track use. What gives?
We finally ran out of our original billet spin on oil filter adapters and did a complete ground up redesign. We are going to have a taller and shorter version, and it will now be available for IMS Solution spin on oil filter adapters, something that we didn't previously offer.
In the interim, we posted "long" versions of both the 1042 and 1348 that could be used instead.
The main reason for recommending the billet filter is to adjust for the use of thicker, XP6 or DI50 oils.
Charles,
I have been using the Made in the USA NAPA Gold 1258 made by Mann + Hummel instead of the 1042 because it is much larger so I feel like it should allow better oil flow, plus since it has a larger external surface area, it would (tiny fraction) improve cooling. I realize my car is a guinea pig in this test, but I've run this for several years. Is there a reason a longer 1042 would be better than a larger 1258?
Thanks
In some cases a longer filter can't be fit, so a larger diameter one can be used, as long as the o-ring fits the diameter of the SPOFA.
We're toying with making a version with integral oil in/out ports and a larger flange so you can use larger diameter filters that are shorter, however the billet filter will be more than adequate.
The billet spin on filters should be ready to ship by next week. We're just down two guys due to medical issues, so we're a little backed up.
Thanks for the quick response.
The 1258 O-ring is exactly the same size as the 1042 (70mm OD) which is why I took the plunge to try it. Nominally the 1042 is 74mm wide and 88mm tall. The 1258 is 94mm wide and 112mm tall. The volume of the 1258 is a little more than 2x the 1042.
It also gets me at least 250ml more oil.
Now thats customer service. Straight from the source! I ordered the LN adapter kit last week and selected 5 filters (boxes say wix), the filter mag and a case of DI50 oil from the drop down options.
Im going to Lime Rock the 23/24th of June. Can I use these filters with the DI50, or do I need a long one? If so where can I order?
Although people have been running those on track for ages, I'd either go with the longer one Glenn is using or this one:

Thank you! Ordered.
Is the new product you have coming out in a few weeks an improvement over these long filters? If so, would love to give those a try.
The new billet filters should be ready to ship en-mass in 1-2 weeks. We just have a handful of each on the shelf that are ready to ship.

Sorry this took so long!
The 996 oil cooler is done... Jake just had to develop a gt3 center exit exhaust to fit it all, and that's almost done.
Thanks Chris. Can you explain the use case for this and the thoughts behind going to 60 microns for filtration? My guess is you only use the 60 micron on track to prioritize oil flow at the expense of filtration, and then swap out for a normal filter after? Or is there something Im missing that makes the 60 micron filtration not an issue such that it can be run all the time? My understanding is that the normal spin on filters are in the mid 20 micron range.
I have the LN low temp thermostat and that has been a game changer, so trying to understand how to employ this new filter as well.
Ideally, you would use the 60 micron filter just for the track as it does prioritize flow for filtration, like a true racing oil filter. One nice thing is that there is no bypass, so nothing can get past the filter, just like was originally intended with the spin on oil filter adapter.
For a mixed use vehicle, you could just swap between this and a conventional spin on filter, just topping the oil along with the filter change. This is assuming you opt for DI50 as a balance of street vs track performance.
Just as an FYI the SOFA is a great product but one thing I have found is you do need to replace the o-ring every 2-3 years. Mine started leaking after 2 years. It's the same oring as the standard Porsche canister. There is a part number for it can't remember what it is. Just keep that in mind when upgrading from the canister.
WIth Viton o-rings, it's not so much a problem, but most of the o-rings out there are Buna-N, which have memory. If the spin on oil filter adapter gets nudged, the o-ring ends up leaking. We switched to Viton many years ago for that exact reason.
Oh geez. Probably at least a decade ago. I guess all o-rings will eventually need replacing, but for sure a Buna-N should not be used if you have a leak or if you decide to replace it as part of preventative maintenance.
