Growing up I always though Michelins were for old men, while us young guys ran Goodyear Eagle GTs or BF Goodrich Comp TAs.
Leading evidence: 'Run goodyear eagle gts or bf goodrich comp tas' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'better' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check manufactured date of the tires' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Failing that, there are lots of used Cayennes out there.

I would consider what Porsche originally spec'd for the car or something proven to be better.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Bought it a month ago. Put it right in the shop to have the ims solution done. Water pump brake lines a few other maintenance items since the car was sitting in a garage for over 10 years! No Queen actually had lots of mice nests! Picked it up last week and put 1000 miles on it in 1 week! No more garage queen! It's my daily driver. The tires have a little cracking on them but he reassured me they would last the season. I dont think he knew how much I would drive it. I got REAL lucky found a hard top for $350! Filthy in a basement but it cleaned up nice. Got a carbon shifter and handbrake from a nice seller on here. Got a set of 17" snows and gorgeous rims from a seller in New Jersey who never used them. $250 for all 4!!! I still had my RTS from my 2001 and mounted it yesterday.
This car will be driven! ALL YEAR! I;m going to do a double din Kenwood within the next 2 weeks. I have a bluetooth FM transmitter for now but I LOVE sport exhaust more! I brought my son to college in it Clarkson in Potsdam NY 3.5 hour drive each way! He is on a full AF ROTC scholarship so he will not cost me anything!
I know I know I put the bike carrier on backward
I fixed it after this pic!
Please check the MANUFACTURED date of the tires. Tires weaken over time and even if they look ok, can explode when you're traveling at a high rate of speed.
Six years is generally the accepted age.

Seriously, congratulations . But do change the tires.
Any more pictures of the bike rack? Model numbers on it? Wonder if it would work on my targa?
And if you're going to drive it all year, you need a better bike.😎
Very nice!
But yes, replace tires if they’re over 6 years old, even if you still have lots of tread left.
The date of manufacture is marked on the tire at the end of the DOT code.
First first two numbers are the week and the last two are the year.
Old tires might not provide adaquate grip, especially in wet conditions.
ok so just vchecked the tires fronts say 4MCR 015X 0714 so that makes them 4 years old? rears say DOT 4MAT 002X 4910 so does that mean they were made in 2010?
A couple of observations-
Every mile you put a n that car is costing you a fortune, assuming you didnt get it for an absolute steal. Theres not many out there with 10k miles. Im not saying dont drive it, Im saying I only drove it when it counts...but thats just me.
Second, I got mine with 19k on the odometer, the tires were older than yours and I went to get them replaced as soon as I got it. The tire machine literally ripped the sidewalks on 3 of them. Tires may look fine, but they do degrade and can blow out and severely lose grip.
Its the standard bike rack for Porsche fits on the roof rack. It wont fit those knobbies! My brother rides in the winter and actually has studded snows on his bike! Im a road bike person, but I will take the car skiing! I have the roof box for our skis!
UMMM how is it costing me a fortune? I drive it when it counts... every day! I did get for a steal and then put $6k into it. IMS solution so it would last forever, water pump brakes and hoses various other minor things. I bought the car to drive and enjoy NOT as an investment if that's what you are thinking by saying it's costing me a fortune! A new one would cost a fortune and I would still drive the heck out of it!.
Im just saying, there arent many pristine examples of the 996 out there. I didnt buy mine as an investment but I did figure I was going to have a free supercar. I guess I feel more like a curator of a 996 museum, I see yours has 10,800 miles and I figure its in great shape. Then I think about the daily driving, door dings, scratches, chips, etc. Then my OCD kicks in.
The first owner of my 2002 996 spent $78,505 on it in 2002 and sold it 9 years later with 17,861 miles on it for $34,900.
The second owner drove it for for 6 year and sold it to me with 54651 miles for $20,000.
I’ve spent about $3K on mods to make it mine.
I’m going to drive the wheels off it and truly enjoy every minute.
I currently have 62267 miles on it.
I sold my BMW “daily driver” because I’d rather be driving my 996.
I have a 58 mile daily commute.
I enjoy every mile!
Drive your 996 daily and enjoy every minute!
See that's what I'm talkin' about! How can you enjoy the car just going out to the garage and looking at it? DRIVE it and enjoy the ride. Life is too short to constantly worry if I'm going to get a door ding. My commute is 22 miles each way I love the drive now, used to hate it. I found a DAS shield on CL today drove 30 minutes each way to go pick it up Cost me $40 the drive was more enjoyable than getting the cover. I think it added too much weight to the frunk and the struts can't hold it up! OH well. Going out for a moonlit drive in a few minutes to pick up my lovely lady, you know "her" competition! Ordered Andrews headlight covers also! Can't wait to get them
I meant to ask you how you like the ceramic coating? I have an appointment to get it done in 2 weeks.
I have never seen that bike rack before? How much are those things? Nice Car. And I agree, drive the heck out of it...I really do not see the 996 going up massively in value even with low miles.
Thats awesome!
I have other investments that make me money.
My car is for fun!
It is not an investment...well maybe an investment in me.
I would have purchased an aircooled 911, if I’d wanted an investment.
I think about buying an aircooled 911 occasionally, but I’d hate to not drive it.
The paint correction and Kenzo ceramic coating were well worth the price.
People are constantly surprised at the age of my car.
Of course mine was in excellent shape having been kept in a garage most of its life.
It still is kept in my garage at home, and in a parking garage in an extra wide spot during the day.
I just bought 2 spare headlight cheaply on eBay for my car.
I’m going to have my headlight covers painted to match.
The spoiler matches perfectly, so I want them to match the headlight covers.
They are close, but not perfect.
I’ll use the spare headlights while the painting is being done.
Then I might sell them...or keep them so I can change my look whenever I want.
My car was mistaken last night for a 997, by a 997 owner who is an enthusiast.
He was surprised that it was a 996.
He said, “ but 996 headlight covers suck...except for those!”
I’ve grown to like the 996.2 headlight look, so I’m glad I now have a choice.
No you cannot operate the top. The instructions actually suggest you pull the fuse so you do not operate it inadvertently. Having said that it only takes 3-5 minutes or less to remove it. It can be used with top up or down or with the hard top on. Be careful the A pillar mounts that stay on the car are a bitch to put on and if not careful you can easily strip the threads on the car. Also the C pillar mounts are easy to crossthread.
THe Bike racks are standard Porsche road bike racks. The mountain bike racks you need to remove the front wheel of the bike. I got them off Craigslist but they are sold through Porsche Tequipment.

Yeah, that was the promised I made when I bought my GT3 with 5,500 miles on it. Now, eight years later, I have just shy of 132K miles. I have no intent to sell it, so I am not saving it for anyone else but my wife and I.
I applaud Dranon for making his new ride an all-season ride. Failing that, there are lots of used Cayennes out there. Just picked up an '06 last year.
I'm talking about the rack, not bike carriers.

can you please take close up pics of how/where it attaches to A pillar and rear area?
Thanks!
How could you own a GT3 and not drive it as much as possible?
Just think of how much fun Marv had driving those 125K+ miles!
A lot more than the person who left theirs parked in the garage for 8 years.
I guess I understand not wanting to drive a nice car up north during the winter.
Our winters are rarely below 50F(10C) so we can run summer tires year-round down here.
Plus there is no salt to have to worry about.
Incredible wide variety in tire pricing! Best tires for daily driver? Bridgestone S04 Potenza vs Potenza S02A vs Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 vs Pzero Rosso I have fun but do not push the car to its limits
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...t&autoModClar=
Congrats!
To echo what others have said on the tires DO NOT DRIVE IT!
One of our VW AC guys was in the same boat and his tires looked brand new. Tire blew out sitting in the garage (true story) last week.
The fact that your mechanic said there ok really concerns me.
My choice of tires is limited due to the unusual size of the GT3 rims (I've tried a number of brands), however, nothing works (for me) like the OEM Michelin PS2s on the street. The difference is striking.
What's important is not how they perform at their limits, but their rain and braking performance in day-to-day driving. Those, in my mind, are safety critical issues that I don't like to cheap-out on if I can avoid it. That one-foot extra stopping distance can mean the difference between a close call and a call for a wrecker.
I would consider what Porsche originally spec'd for the car or something proven to be better. It's not just the car, but your (and others') life ride on those tires.
My car came with new-ish Bridgestone Potenzia S.04 Pole Position tires.
They've still got a little over 5/32" of tread left.
I'm not real impressed with them.
Pretty soon I'm going to replace them with Michelin Pilot Super Sport or the newer Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.
I had MPSS on my previous car (BMW 135i) and they were awesome.
Of course I went through tires every 1.5 years, but that was about 18,000-20,000 miles.
They don't last long, but the grip was amazing.
Growing up I always though Michelins were for old men, while us young guys ran Goodyear Eagle GTs or BF Goodrich Comp TAs.
Ha, now I'm a Michelin man.
I usually use Discount Tire.
Ive never had problems with them scratching any of my wheels.
I also use a local wheel dealer who sells high-end rims.
I normally buy my tires from him now because of his Tire Rack/NTB/Discount Tire/Costco/Sams Club/Firestone/Goodyear beating prices.
