Suggestion
If you value your hand and like it where it is, I would certainly disconnect the battery.

Above and beyond setting the airbag off, if you dont disconnect the battery, the window may just come down when you have your arm deep in there.

and then the same guy in this thread below 3 minutes earlier (post #37) posted that the he got a cheap ebay part that solved all of his problems
Ive read a bunch of the DIY door latch threads and when I cross reference the part numbers on some of the parts websites I get conflicting information on what the right part number is. I need the passenger latch assembly on a 2001 996. Pelican says the
8N2-837-016-B-OEM is the right part number. I was hoping to cross reference this with the VW part numbers to save some money. Can anyone confirm what the VW part number is, or if this is the correct Porsche part number? The 2001 996 part number seems to be different than the 2002-2005.
yes Ive read that one and a few of the other popular DIYs. but I still cannot confirm that the part number works for a 2001 passenger side door latch. I think the difference is in 02 they changed to having passenger door locks, whereas in 01 they didnt, so the part numbers for the 01 and 02 models are different.
id like to get a used VW latch if possible.
if anyone can confirm the part number for an 01 passenger latch, either VW or Porsche part numbers?
And how does this make sense. pelican says the URO part
8N1-837-015C fits a 2001 996 left side/drivers side and they stock it. They do not stock the right side/passenger part , which in theory should be 8N1-837-016C. German Auto Supply does carry the Uro 8N1-837-016C but a 2001 996 passenger door is not on their compatibility list.
Im confused
And then you have threads like this one that says the 986 and 996 are interchangeable. But every car parts website says otherwise.
https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo.../151397/page1/
cant figure it out, irritating
I don't think anyone here cares but I ordered a OE part #3B1837016CG for $85 German Auto Supply to see if this works. There are OE versions of the 3B1837016CG on ebay for like $44 plus shipping. However, I decided to buy from German Supply House in hopes that their vetting process for some of these OE products is a little bit better than the companies that are offering the products for less. Who knows,,,it's probably all the same mfg in China that they are buying from. The warranty is pointless since I need to hack apart that red hinge piece to make it work, thus voiding the warranty.
I'll let everyone know how the install goes.
More importantly, report on how the locks work after installation. I have read that the VW door latch does weird things when locking/unlocking the car. I don't know if this helps but here is a snip of the part numbers from Auto Atlanta
thank you
that was mentioned in this thread. post #4 on 8/16/2019

I would have figured the "cheap ebay part that solved all of his problems" was the OE VW part #
3B1837016CG.
Hence my confusion.
I'm going to test before installing into the door. From what I read on other threads you cannot install it without hacking of the side of that red hinge piece. I'll test the functionality with the wiring harness connected. The lock/unlock function is critical. If it's wonky with this VW part, then it's getting returned.
You need to disconnect your battery so you don't set off the airbag light. So make sure when testing, you reconnect the airbag first and then reconnect the battery. Unless you have Durametric which can reset the airbag light.

Did both sides, the only thing that was wrong with the 996 unitS were the microswitch on the latch. The interior lights dont come on when the door opens, only after turning the key. I assume this is the issue
Other than that they seem to work fine. If I were to do it again, I would probably try and replace the microswitch.
ya Im not sure what you bought there. Seems pretty suspect
my passenger latch actuator has a short. When you touch the wires on the micro switch thats on the latch the window starts to freak out. I cant pinpoint it, whether its at the micro switch or inside the latch where the wires from the micro switch connect to the circuit board. So i need to replace the whole thing.
Received
3B1837016CG from German auto supply. This is a 8 pin unit. The Porsche is a 9 pin. So this wont work. And Im not sure how anyone got power to this to test the door locks if you cant connect the wiring harness to it.
Sorry to say but I think this is one instance where buying the original door latch is called for. The job is such a PITA, but with the right part it sure simplifies things. My drivers side door latch gave up after 20 years. Sometimes would not let me in the car. I just sprung for the Porsche OE door latch and got the job done. I know it's expensive, but you do own a Porsche. Don't go cheap on it.
Mines not really a Porsche since its got a twin turbo ls1. Got plenty of other quality Porsches that I need to spend on quality Porsche parts, because they always break. Maybe somebody has used another vw part number with success. The only part that was bad on mine was the microswitch waterproof cover. Without that it doesnt make contact with the latch to signal that its open to drop and hold the window.
its $750 for the passenger latch after tax and shipping. I'm going to weld the door shut at this point.
The information on all of the threads here is garbage.
Above and beyond setting the airbag off, if you dont disconnect the battery, the window may just come down when you have your arm deep in there. If you value your hand and like it where it is, I would certainly disconnect the battery.
If you one of those who think the information on the threads is garbage, please disregard the garbage info above. Hopefully you have an auto car and can place it in gear with your remaining left hand.
hahah, youre funny.
im not referring to the information specifically in this thread. Just the other DIYs that everyone here thinks is the holy grail of information.
can you send a link to your ls build ?
you mean the latch that i took a picture of above? That doesnt work?
Alright internet friends, we might have cracked this one. Looks like our boy Cape Coral replaced both of his latches with URO branded parts in the thread below. It doesn't say what car he is referencing in the thread however I creeped his profile and looked into a few threads he started and he looks to have a 2000 996. If this latch worked in his car then it should work in mine. Ordered part, should be here in a week. URO has a 2 year warranty and seems to be one of the higher end China brands. Stay tuned, hopefully this works and you won't have to hear me bitch1n about this door latch anymore.

The 8N1 parts are for a first-generation Audi TT and are rumored to be the correct ones. The 996.1 electrical system is almost identical to the first gen Audi TT.
Forgot to post this video
at first the drop down stopped working. I replaced the out handle micro switch which didnt fix it. And then when I took the latch out i found this. It starts to freak out when you hold the hatch in your hand and move it around slightly.

Happy to reply back to say that the URO part was nearly an exact replica of the Porsche part and retains every function of the Porsche part. Holding the Porsche part and the URO part in my hands you can barely tell of any quality difference. This was not the case with the other Chinese VW unit that I bought (and didnt end up working anyways). The window drop problem has been solved and functioning 100%. All lock/unlock features work with the key and inside the car. The door closes and latches properly, not changes to the feel of the latching or opening of the door between the Porsche and Uro part. The illuminated lock/unlock button is now off on the dash.
Driver side - 8N1837015C
Passenger side - 81N837016C
As mentioned earlier i did get an eBay VW part that was supposed to be a cross to the Porsche part, however it was an 8 pin unit and the Porsche has a 9 fin unit. The part numbers are very ambiguous. For example, One letter at the end of the part number throws the hole can be the result between an 8 pin and a 9 pin unit. My suggestion is to stick with either a genuine Porsche part or buy one of these URO units. I paid $125 shipped with tax and I believe the genuine Porsche part was in the range of $525-$550 for the passenger side unit after shipping and tax. The drivers side unit is a bit cheaper.
***NOTE - my car does not have the alarm option (or at least I dont think). It is an 01 996.
When you go on the URO website or eBay or any other automotive website that carries this URO part they say it does not fit the 996, and only the boxster. Im confirming that it does in fact fit.
hope this helps someone else out there. Happy wrenching!!
I took my latch apart and found the solder that hold the connector to the board were broken. some flux and a re-flow fixed my flaky latch. Everybody talks about the switches when I bet it's broken solder joints most of the time. The latch is not hard to work on
BTW, I have extra passenger side latch (the expensive version) I bought off ebay and I verified it works if anyone is interested
Late to the party, but I ordered a URO 1388358-UR-8N1837016C from AutohausAZ and it was a quick and simple 30min install and the part works flawlessly. I did not disconnect the battery or the exterior door handle and had zero trouble. I did swap the little shroud bit over from the original, though I watched a YouTube video where the guy did not take that step.
Hey there,
I purchased the URO latches for both sides and after I replaced them when I pressed lock on the key fob it locks and unlocks. What soon followed is a double deep.
When I turned the lock on the driver side door. The driver side locks and one-beep followed, but the pass side stays unlocked. When I opened the pass side the alarm went off.
My car is a MK2 Carrera.
The parts I purchased are here:

Im wondering if there is a difference between MK1 and MK2 door latches? Does this URO part only fits MK1?
I am taking it back to the shop but in the mean time any advice is welcomed 🙂.
thanks a lot for this thread tho.
I think you are onto something here. Mine being an 01, its an MK1. I do not know what the electrical differences would be b/t Mk1 & MK2 and this latch, but you must've uncovered something with the symptoms you are experiencing.
For those of us that like to try it ourselves. I took out the latch and found where the shirt was coming from.
if you look closely at the solder, you can see a hairline crack around it. Three of them were looking like this so I put some flux on it and it melted the solder puddle. Everything works as it should now.
