Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As far as when the small single row bearing was last used, my understanding is it was phased out with the MY2005 997s.

My engine is generally very clean which leads me to believe someone didn't want the next owner to know.

Not sure if this is good or bad, but I guess I dodged a bullet replacing the bearing since I am generally in the "don't replace a dual row bearing" group.

I am not an expert on the replacement engines, but I would guess this engine was replaced sometime between 2000/2001 and early 2005 when Porsche was using the single row bearing.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I replaced my IMS bearing this year, and to my surprise a single row IMS came out. My tech said it was probably an earlier replacement bearing, but I didn't believe him. Today I took a cloth to the serial number on the block and I could finally just make it out with my camera at the right angle. M96/01AT... Replacement engine. Not sure if this is good or bad, but I guess I dodged a bullet replacing the bearing since I am generally in the "don't replace a dual row bearing" group.
Note to readers, make sure you know what you have. My car fax has a lot of history, but it didn't catch this one.. My engine is generally very clean which leads me to believe someone didn't want the next owner to know. Almost appears to be sanded off. The more you know!
Was it the large single row bearing? I thought all M96/01AT engines has that and the only way to replace it was to split the case. Did your shop do that, or is there another way?
I am not an expert on the replacement engines, but I would guess this engine was replaced sometime between 2000/2001 and early 2005 when Porsche was using the single row bearing. My March 1998 build, 99 model has the original M96/01 engine (with the double row). I know the numbers went as high as M96/06 by 2005. Not sure if there were any beyond that.
If my memory serves me well, the single row bearing was introduced during mid-year 2000 and phased out during mid-year 2006 based on the PCA IMS videos. Correct?
From discussion I have read on this site, with comments from the Flat6 folks, some of the MY2000 and 2001s came with the dual row and some with the small single. There is no way to know what you have without looking at the IMSB cover. As far as when the small single row bearing was last used, my understanding is it was phased out with the MY2005 997s. I have not seen anything about MY2006 997s having the small single row. My understanding is that the M97 engines used in late 2005 through 2008 came with the larger single row.
Oh gotcha... so the smaller single row bearing was phased out in 2005 and not seen in 2006? Or, based on your "there is no way to know what you have without looking" there is a slight chance the older single row could be found in the 2006 model year?
