Here�s what a reputable Porsche shop told me. This is on top of $600 for a PPI. I�d love to get any and all thoughts�.
The borescope inspection is an entirely different service not included with the appraisal. The oil pan and air box are removed, the oil pan and the engine need to be cleaned and all existing silicon removed. Once done we use our borescope camera to inspect each cylinder. Once that is done, new silicon is applied and the engine is filled with oil and brought to temperature and rechecked. The estimate for this service is $920 for labor and oil and sealant.
If I remember correctly my basic (no bore scope) PPI was 2 hours labor.
Separately the IMS Solution pre-qualification from a certified installer was 4 hours labor.
That included checking the ecu, cam deviation,
fuel trim values, fault codes and over revs, testing the aos, draining the oil, cutting and inspecting the oil filter, removing and inspecting the oil sump, bore scoping all cylinders, cleaning the oil swirl pots and resealing the oil sump.
Combining (there�s definitely some redundancy that should reduce the time charged) the two services plus oil is around $900, so $1,500 sounds kind of high.
But I guess that also depends on the labor rate in your area.
What other shops are in the area that are trustworthy? Never hurts to get second (or multiple) opinions / quotes for things. Also to see if what's discussed varies or is fairly consistent.
Agree that its a little high for an oil pan drop scope. But $600 for PPI is going rate in my market. If this is your local PCA indie specialist shop i would just bite the bullet. The cost of these cars is almost irrelevant today, its really the cost of the deferred maintenance.
It's amusing that people are giving advice to a 3 year old PPI question.
I really hope he's made a decision by now, and those quotes are probably no longer valid.
