Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just replaced an engine that broke a rod and have a nice set of heads to scavenge off of it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This concerns a potential replacement engine for my 1999 Cabriolet. Current 3.4 engine has failed and "playing" with a replacement engine, to get it back on the road. Upon tear down of the engine, I noticed that the number 5 cylinder (passenger side, middle cylinder), looks to have corrosion on the valves. The engine was pulled from a working car, but has sat a while. The engine turns over just fine and isn't frozen. The exhaust port also seems to have signs of coolant in the cylinder. 1. Basically, I want to know what your thoughts are on the next steps? All the other valves look great. I am thinking about removing the cylinder head and having it sent out. 2. Should I do both heads? 3. What is a ballpark price to have the heads reworked? I am hesitant to just put it in the car "as is". 4. How difficult is it to remove the heads and reinstall, and keep timing? I can lock the cam in place, with the tool that comes with the IMS retrofit kit. Any questions or advice is helpful.

POST 3Original post

BTW, this is a good read. It's full of info on these heads and what needs to be reworked. https://newsite.hamheads.com/2016/11...age-m96m979a1/

POST 4Original post

I just replaced an engine that broke a rod and have a nice set of heads to scavenge off of it. There is only 53K miles on the engine if you are interested to buy as another option. Otherwise I will likely ebay it.
