Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So how detailed would the Porsche dealer have documented an IMS retrofit back in 2007 in a Carfax report while the 2004 996 was still under warranty? The Carfax reports, "transmission removed and replaced" and then, "front crankshaft oil seal replaced." If the transmission was removed, wouldn't that imply that the "rear" oil seal was replaced and maybe the IMSB. Any implication for the IMSB in this reporting? /x3

POST 2Original post

Sounds like just a what people here call the RMS - rear main seal. Not the IMS bearing.

POST 3Original post

Unless the work order specifically states something IMSB-related, there is no reason to assume anything was done. On the plus side, "IMS is not addressed" means it wasn't done wrong or for some unknown reason. No surprises is way better than under-documented repairs.

It is in the "front" of the engine as installed in the car. It's just typically referred to as the rear main seal because in most cars the transmission is in rear of the engine. As others have said, if nothing else is mentioned in the work report, you can assume that ONLY the RMS was done, and the IMS has not been touched. Especially since Porsche dealers did not replace IMS bearings; just entire engines once the IMS had failed. The only other thing that MIGHT have been changed is the oil seal on the IMS flange.

POST 5Original post

You could try calling the dealer. Granted they may no longer have the records going back to 2007, but it could be worth a shot.

POST 6Original post

My Carfax states the car has an automatic transmission, I'm positive it doesn't
