Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The noise sounds like a fan and is coming from the rear so I assumed it was the engine compartment fan.
Leading evidence: 'engine compartment fan' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'engine compartment fan' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run of engine compartment fan' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The engine fan won't run with the engine lid open.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I bought a '99 C2 with 67k on the clock from a client this week. As the title states, the engine compartment fan turns on when the car is first started and the engine is completely cooled down but shuts off after ~60 seconds or so. I'm in NY so the temperature is pretty cool this time of year. This isn't normal, is it? I have searched and the only fan issues I have found deal with either the fan never turning off or never turning on. Any ideas? Is there a test procedure for the sensor? Maybe a resistance value it should have at a given temperature?
On a side note, IMHO if anyone is sad they can't ride motorcycles any more, buy a Porsche! I found it to be almost as fun.
From the service manual...
"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.
After-running of engine compartment fan
If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the DME control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds."
Thats actually what caused me to get rid of my bike: every time I went into the garage to make a choice between a motorcycle and a Porsche, I kept choosing the Porsche.
Not to sidejack, but I'm going through this process now... all these distracted drivers w/ their damn cell phones make me apprehensive about riding most days. I love my Bimmers, but they are no substitute for my Beemers. Having just acquired my first 911, I can now be a cager and have almost as much fun.
Oh, and yeah, your fan ain't working right. I'd be suspect to whatever determines the engine bay temp.
How do you know it is the engine fan? Check that the engine sensor is in the correct grommet, right side of engine between intakes.
Sounds to me like the normal operation of the SAI pump...runs at startup for about 60 seconds..and is right under the engine compartment fan. Open the engine lid and start up. The engine fan won't run with the engine lid open. Then see if what you hear running is the SAI pump.
Yea....I'm sure that it's the SAI (secondary air injection) pump also. When you open the engine compartment, it's on the driver's side just forward of the bumper with a couple rubber hoses attached. That's what you are hearing and it's completely normal.
The SAI pump makes sense. The noise sounds like a fan and is coming from the rear so I assumed it was the engine compartment fan. The only time I have heard it is when first starting and only runs for a minute or so. Thanks!
Nice, i have a couple of R bikes too including an R1100s. I test rode a K1300s in the spring and didn't love it. Its fast, but not very agile. The R11s has way more character albeit slow in comparison. I just don't have a lot places to ride +120mph around here, but i do have a lot of great back roads to carve.
Drove a K1300GT this weekend, was SOOOO happy to be back on my R1150RS again. No comparison. The engine revs very nicely though... I like the R1100S as well a lot so in the end might go for that as well. Nice toys anyway!
