I always use some lumbar to put under the ramps then some longer pieces on top to make it not as steep.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

43 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I got my dream job and we are moving to the ATL area. I'm looking at hauling my 911 behind a 26' Penske truck. Has anyone here ever done something similar? I'm not sure if the 911 will make it up the ramps. Penske states that the ramp angle is 13.75 degrees.

POST 2Original post

I have no idea about the trailer but whats the dream job ? Something Porsche related ?

POST 4Original post

Nice I live in Atlanta also. Join the Peachstate PCA.

I will be sure to do so. I'm currently in the Maverick PCA and will be transferring my membership.

POST 6Original post

Hey congratulations on the dream job! My dad was a BA pilot, I always thought it was pretty awesome. I brought my 996 home on a u-Haul trailer last weekend. If there's a natural slope, maybe a driveway or somesuch, that can help mitigate the slope of the ramps. Otherwise be prepared with wood blocks to put under the wheels at various points - I definitely needed them. I also had to "modify" the front of the trailer with a bfh to get the front bumper to clear it. Ymmv though - my car is a little lower than stock. Maybe ask Penske if they have a specific trailer that will work with the 996?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the congrats, I feel very lucky and fortunate to land this gig. And thanks for the pic!

POST 9Original post

A. How dare you leave N TX? Delta - pfft, I'd rather drop fish from a Maule in Canada/AK - eh. B. It should go up the ramps ok, but if you have any close fit on the front bumper, leave it attached to the truck, put the tongue jack down, and lift the nose of the trailer. Or, if you can back it up to the driveway slope, you can reduce the angle a lot. C. Come on out on Sat to the bkfst so we can say so long. Delta, that sucks you have to sit up there and push buttons. All those meat sacks, crying kids, century old stews, Scarebus, yuch.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yessir I'll definitely miss the 928 group. I'm planning on attending on Saturday as a last hurrah, but as usual, I'm on call for my current job so I'm still unsure if I'll actually be able to make it out. No Scarebus for me if I have a choice. I want the 717.

POST 11Original post

Some 2x10x5' work really well underneath the ramps to essentially extend them out. Also, if you back onto the trailer you won't have to pull as far forward to balance it out.

POST 13Original post

Wecome to A T L A N T A, G E O R G I A!!!! To be initiated into the ATL family, you must travel over to the downtown Varsity and eat (no less than) two chili dogs, side of onion rings, and frosted orange!

POST 15Original post

Everyone has their own level of accepted risk. On a trailer, I'd be concerned about stuff flying up from the tow vehicle and nicking/chipping the front of the 996. Even if you duct tape the heck out of blankets to protect the front of the car, things come loose, etc, and start flapping in the breeze, which causes more to come loose, etc. I just checked one site, but DFW to ATL is about $550 from the "name" auto transporters. I'd be very tempted to ship it that way than to risk hail/theft/rocks/etc. It's one thing to trailer from DFW to Houston, but all the way to Atlanta? Hmmmm..... And, yes, I know folks do it (trailer) all the time with no probs whatsoever.

Put the center rad in at the same time. You will like it. Cold AC all the time, and no overheat ever. Since the cooling system will be open already, this is a good time. Also, have both rads/condensers cleaned well.

Welcome to Peachstate PCA! We have a few Delta Pilots that are part of the autocross group. One, Rich Armstrong, is co-chairing this year. Next event is next Sunday and then 7/17.

I wish I could but changing jobs and moving to a new state requires me to put funds elsewhere. But she does already have new radiator fans and I cleaned the rads and condensers in the Fall. This water pump replacement is proactive as I don't know the age of the current pump and I figure a $45 low temp thermostat is a worthwhile addition too. Btw, I won't be able to attend tomorrow. I got called out for a trip and am stuck in AMA till tomorrow afternoon. Send my greetings to everyone. I'm bummed that I won't be able to attend one last event with the group.

I had two bad experiences shipping cars with auction shipping companies. One tore my oil pan and other lines off the bottom of the car. Another dumped fuel all over an enclosed trailer which made my car smell like fuel for several days. If you are going to ship a pristine car, I would go with a more reputable non auction company. If it is a DD, then the cost might be worth it. Auction shipping cost me 500 open trailer or 800 enclosed trailer for half way across the country.

POST 31Original post

Didn't like my first experience shipping so just picking this one up myself. I won't save any money but at least I can control the timing and process. Plus it will be nice to meet the PO in person this time.

Let the air out of the trailer tires if needed. This worked well for me.

POST 33Original post

you will need to put a 2x6 under the front wheels once you get it up there so you can put the webstraps on w/o effing up the car.

POST 34Original post

I use Exotic Car Transport and they charge me about $.80 a mile. I am here and Marietta and we welcome you to Atlanta. Make sure you make it up to the Big Chicken and grab some lunch!

I won't be far from you. We are moving to Roswell. As an update, I've decided to go ahead and drive the 911 to Georgia instead of pulling her behind the moving truck. I think that will work out better and won't require me to drive the moving truck quite so slow when we take it from TX to GA. Though the moving truck will still be pretty slow... Thanks for the input everyone. There were a lot of great ideas posted here for loading and unloading.

POST 37Original post

I had to remove my front lip, but otherwise it was pretty easy getting my C4S that was lowered quite a bit onto the trailer. IMAG1140.jpg

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well the 911 and I successfully made the 800 mile trip in 12 hours 20 minutes with 3 gas stops. I averaged 26.5 mpg for the entire trip, which is amazing to me. I've never gotten better than 19 mpg or so with mixed city and highway driving. I had a new Pierburg composite-impeller water pump and Wahler 160 degree thermostat installed just the other day and this was the coolest I've ever seen her run in terms of water temps. At the start of the trip, I drove for close to 20 minutes at 70mph before the coolant temp gauge passed the 180 degree mark. Obviously this was due to the new thermostat opening fully at 160 F instead of waiting till 180 F. The needle sat on the right edge of the number 8 pretty much the entire trip while doing 74-75mph with ambient temps generally between 84 and 90 F. The outside temp went up to 94 F a few times and the coolant temp increased to right in-between the 8 and 0 numbers. At one point I encountered some rain and the ambient temps cooled to about 74 F and the coolant temp dropped below the 180 degree mark while I was still doing 75mph. I've never seen it do that before! Btw, the Scotch painters tape worked like a charm. It endured the entire trip without flying off, even during the heavy rain. It peeled right off last night and the front was nice and clean. It was worth the 45 minutes it took to apply.
