Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Ignition switch, brakes, clutch, and engine replaced; sounds like a theft recovery after the joyride.
Leading evidence: 'Replace ; sounds like a theft recovery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ; sounds like a theft recovery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Looking at the paperwork that came with my 99 it looks like the engine was replaced in 2002 with 12K miles on it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 996 had a replacement engine (under CPO warranty) in 2008 at 50,627 miles. Paperwork states "Replace engine - crankcase bolt tab broken on engine case".
I've googled but can't figure out exactly what this means. Not that it really matters, I'm just curious. Anyone?
CPO doesn't cover anything, the warranty you get with buying a CPO and depending on the level of coverage you buy will depend on what is covered. The drivetrain is covered in almost any level of warranty that you purchase
Interesting - thanks all.
My mentioning of CPO above is perhaps a red herring. What I have from the printout is an entry at Porsche of Rockville for service, ignition switch, sunroof switch, clutch, brakes and replacement engine; cost breakdown is parts $1668.02, labour $1791.67, warranty $12428.78.
As I say, just curious as to what "crankcase bolt tab broken" meant, since it's not any of the usual failure modes one hears so much about!
Heh. Glad they specified that the crankcase bolt tab was located on the engine case, so as to avoid any confusion. After all, it could have been a crankcase bolt tab on a headlight, or a crankcase bolt tab on the headliner...someone was trying to church up their writing...
There's got to be a story in there somewhere...I'm thinking Ferris-Bueller-parking-garage-attendant grade...
Not necessarily. This "CBTB" may be a new, as of yet undiscovered/undocumented, catastrophic mode of failure for the 996. After all, new ones are being discovered all the time. Someone should make a list of them. Maybe even write a book about them.
Given that my car is clearly prone to CBT(OEC) issues I'm wondering if I should drop the engine and preventatively retrofit the CBT(OEC) Solution.
Incidentally I gave a ride to a friend who commented that she felt like she was in Ferris Bueller. Prophetic or mere coincidence?
Here is my theory. The dealer that did the work had not had a single IMSB failure. So his mechanics were itching to replace an engine. Did not matter what the reason was.
So, exactly like the Ferrari scene in Ferris Buehler, off they took the car on a "test run". When they returned, they "discovered" the car needed an engine replacement.
As Porsche NA paid for the work, voila, the dealer's mechanics had their engine replacement job.
Interesting and funny stuff. Looking at the paperwork that came with my 99 it looks like the engine was replaced in 2002 with 12K miles on it. No reason given just "Replaced Engine". I am sure that it must have been because of this CBT issue.

Hopefully not ... the full entry is along the lines of "Customer states the ignition lock cylinder is sticking and the wipers would not come on. Correction: Replaced ignition lock cylinder. Tech notes front brakes worn; replace front brakes. Customer notes clutch feels like it's slipping - replace clutch assembly".
So hopefully Ferris and friends haven't been anywhere near it - but all this was eight years ago, so who knows?
