Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I put this out in the general discussion thread but thought this is a better area. Sorry for posting twice. New and first time Porsche owner here and need some help. I feel very stupid asking but I know no better place to start then here. In the engine compartment all the way to the left sort of to the left and behind the air intake is a container with a screw top and liquid inside with a min and max line,, what is that? Also in the middle is a yellow dip stick. Is that my oil dipstick? If not, what is it and where is the dip stick? And where will I find the air filter? I changed the cabin filter which is in the front of the car, but where is the air filter? The pictures may help you help me. Thanks to all

That container is the coolant reservoir. Yes, that is your oil dipstick - use it. The air filter is inside that big black box you see on top of your engine. P.S. You might want to pick up a manual on your car and read it cover to cover.

POST 3Original post

Damn obviously I type way too slow haha... Not sure if serious or troll... Anyway: 1. Coolant bottle/reservoir - holds the stuff that cools your engine because your 996 is "water cooled". 2. Air filter is inside the big black plastic box, undo the screws, unclip the cable to the MAF, unclip 2 hidden clips holding the cable in place, undo the jubilee clip to the throttle body and take the top off. Air filter is inside... 3. Go buy the 101 projects for your 996 or as tripleblack mentioned read your manual Good luck!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry for being so dumb. This is my first Porsche and rear engine car. I have had a few vettes and they seemed more intuitive, anyway I am learning and do appreciate the help. Hopefully I will have better things to share in the coming months. By the way, Avatar is Henry the VIII's toilet seat from his palace at Hampton Court outside of London. I will change it this weekend with a picture of my car.

I figured it's something special

Don't sweat it, the first few days I spent figuring out the same stuff. Simply googling 996 instructions on _____ should give you lots of detailed threads. I've relied on archived forum threads for several updates on my 996. Ask away & search & you'll learn quickly.

POST 10Original post

The first week I had mine, I got really excited because I found the air filter and was able to change it. It seemed like a huge accomplishment. These cars aren't real intuitive but there is a ton of good documentation for DIY projects. To start, look at the stickies at the top of this page and check out pelican parts how to section.

POST 11Original post

A good avatar for you would be YOUR toilet. Preferably with YOUR head in it hahaha.

POST 12Original post

Wait until you have to figure where to place your cell phone, guns, groceries, etc and come here and ask for advice

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13382617

Same - new guy enthusiasm, probably, but every time I get something done on my 996 I find it hugely satisfying. OP, that toilet of yours is just down the road from where I'm from

POST 14Original post

(see picture) That big round thing in the center is your steering wheel. The little round thing next to the big round thing, is your ignition switch. The little stick in the middle... ugg... you get the picture. Just kiddin' with you!!!hahaha Welcome to Rennlist Rock!!!

POST 15Original post

Next up: Which pedal does what? And what do those gauge things tell me? Welcome! Since you are in there, make sure the coolant cap (the blue one) has a part no. that ends in 04.

POST 16Original post

"What are those 4 big, round, black things my car sits on?" JK. I remember way back when. I too was young and dumb and asked stoopid questions. Now that I'm older and on my second Porsche, I still ask stoopid questions. And don't give the OP a hard time about not using "Search". I bet no one has ever asked those questions before...

POST 17Original post

OP: BTW your coolant level appears to be just below the minimum line. Depending on the temperature at time of pic you might need to add fluid. Coolant appears greenish-blue. Be careful adding coolant as mixing types can cause problems. Distilled water can be used to top off. P.S. Do NOT open this cap if engine is hot!!!!

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 13383277

Agreed! I personally screwed this up before. Had a SAAB 9-3 and poured conventional cheapo green coolant in with the pink Dex-cool. That was NOT a pretty moment when I found out the two types could adversely react with each other chemically.

POST 20Original post

Hi, I am new to the forum and am also a first time Porsche owner. As I cannot start a new thread, I thought I would post in a related forum. I have an old crispy rubber seal around the female section of my rear window latch trim on my 996 targa. I would very much appreciate it if someone would be kind enough to provide me with the part number as I would like to replace it. My usual mechanic doesn't seem to be able to locate the part number if this rubber piece. And help or advice (maybe part no. diagrams) would be great! Thank you all very much in advance.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the help, do I put distilled water right in the container with the min/max lines? If so I would just need a few ounces it seems??

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13383277

Do I just add distilled water right into the reservoir with the min/max lines?

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 13385531

Yes, but only if the engine is cold (or at least sitting overnight.)

POST 24Original post

Rock: Water tank is larger than it appears. Just add slowly and watch until to top line. As Walter reminds only when engine is cold. Removing cap when hot throws fluid everywhere and can burn skin horribly.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to all who helped with my simplistic questions. I have read most of the manual and am getting 101 Projects for your 996. Happy Fathers day to all the Dads out there as well
