It apparently had its original tires (since replaced).

That top had been replaced somewhere before I owned it and it leaked a bit.

During my pre-purchase inspection, the folks at Akers Porsche (Seattle) put it up on the lift and said: "this car does not look like it's ever been used".

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Here In the ATL, I do use my '03 4Runner on truly nasty storm days but I have still managed to enjoy putting just over 17,000 miles in 20 months of ownership and do not intend to reduce the smile factor anytime soon.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay, I admit it. I sort of attempt to "preserve" my 996 by only driving it under "ideal" conditions.
That means I don't drive it in the rain. I don't drive it in the snow (infrequent here in greater Seattle - and they only use sand not salt if it does snow - and on very few roads).
What am I "preserving" it for? I don't know, perhaps for a grandchild.
I do drive it at least once every two or so days. Unless it's raining.
My previous 911 was a '95 (also a cabriolet). That top had been replaced somewhere before I owned it and it leaked a bit. Just a small drip from
the top driver's side where it joined the windshield. My current '03 C4 Cab does not leak at all.
The PO apparently obeyed the same rules. It was a So. Cal car garaged in Newport Beach. During my pre-purchase inspection, the folks at Akers Porsche (Seattle) put it up on the lift and said: "this car does not look like it's ever been used". Original paint all over, and just about chip-less. It apparently had its original tires (since replaced).
I'm hoping some day, that these cars - especially those well preserved ones, - will be worth decent money. My '95 was purchased for about $19k, driven for 7 years by me (55k miles put on it in that time) and I sold it for $20k.
Not bad, eh?
If you live in Seattle, and avoid rain, that is a lot of down time, isn't it? That's a serious, not sarcastic, question BTW. I don't drive my Porsche in the rain, but in our chunk of Texas, that's not a big constraint. Glad you're enjoying your Porsche...T
I just took mine on a 1 mile dirt road (friend's driveway), so I'm not preserving it for much. I don't drive it up avoidable hills during traffic hours (Gough Street, if anyone is familiar).
I drive in the rain and snow (when I ski in the White Mtns). I didn't drive my 1979 SC more than 4k miles /year and I only drive my 996 about 4k a year as well. I'm NOT saving it for the next owner this time around, but trying to enjoy my Porsche all year.
just a few from years and different forums of why they don't drive them.

......many many more....of these ....ALL ARE TRUE
I don't drive mine if I need to carry a fully assembled flag pole; anything in a 55 gallon drum; or anything, including people, over 500 pounds. I try to avoid driving it while asleep. Other than that, these are great driver's cars. They are really good in the rain as long as you have a good alignment. I can't say anything about the snow because I think I have only seen actual, on the ground, snow twice in the last 18 years. My old SC was a great snow car with the right tires and I suspect these are as well.
Virginia uses an advanced vehicle solvent, Car-B-Gon, to treat roads in winter (snow not strictly required). I put my C2 away from the first snow that sticks, till {the CarBGon drifts are gone + 1 real rainfall}.
I mostly skip the rain. But 911 is such a damn treat in the rain, that's more of a case-by-case thing.
Growing up in CT, I came to really hate the crusty seized fasteners that vexed every little project. Bought a clean, correct, easily-serviced car and am taking steps to keep it that way.
I don't drive mine in the mountains during snow season because (a) ground effects tend to get torn off in snow more than a few inches deep and (b) other California drivers are abysmal in snow and tend to run into everything imaginable - curbs, mailboxes, walls, pedestrians, and ESPECIALLY other cars.
Since I have no back seats, I can't drive it when I have more than one passenger - but those are pretty much my only restrictions.
I don't ENJOY driving it in heavy rain due to the propensity of wide tires to hydroplane, although my 996 is less prone to planing than my Corvette...
I drive in the rain, unless there is a chance of hail. I'll just load up the trunk of the e30 for winter as always... love that car!
I'm glad I have a garage at work and home.
I am frequently on call and need a reliable car to shuttle me to the hospital whenever I need and that's what my C2 does. I drive my 996 every day, go to work, bring my kid to daycare and do errands. My 4 year old loves driving in it and is having so much fun. At the end life is about making memories, and my car is one of my memory makers. No point in preserving it.
When the snow on the road is 3" or more (bottom of the front bumper) or it's still buried from a big snow (I go with the "let it melt" method of snow clearing).
No snow as i don't want to buy snows. Plus the crap they put on the roads here would be abuse to my car. I have taken it on dirt roads and put bags of mulch in the front. It makes a great used car.
I drive my car every day whatever the weather/situation! It's my daily driver. Sometimes I feel bad about the miles, but then I don't care. I bought it to drive it, and that's just what I will do
I drive my car all year around, high ways, rain no snow (because Florida). I do not track it or autocross it. Bought it "brand new" 2 years ago with 3900 miles, original tires, undercarriage was impecable along with the paint, is my weekend drive but I drive it all year around and I drive a lot, now I have 13400 miles I put 9500 in the past 2 years, which is double of what most of the so called "daily drivers" put on them in a year.
I feel like the previous owner save this car for me, my plans are to enjoy it as much as I can.
I don't drive my C4S near enough. Mainly because I live less than five miles form my place of employment and usually make my stops on the way home from there. Sigh. I usually average around 1000 miles a year on my play car in a good year.
I grew up in pickup trucks so for me I feel safer in the winter time driving a truck or suv. I have a 2015 suburban and 2016 F150 which I use from late November to April. Once the salt is off the roads the 911 comes out. Unless doing big errands I use my car 3-5 times per week. Summer average is 8,000 - 10,000 km.
PorscheMikeandNancy....noticed you came from NH which is where I live. I drive it throughout the year unless there is heavy snow; say 4" + for this car! I purchased it in 2013 from the original owner when it had 18,000 miles. There was a moment where I thought I would only use it sparingly and only in good weather but that thought didn't last long. I enjoy it too much to let it sit and my two kids can fight over it after I am gone when it has (hopefully) a gazzilion miles on it (it now has 55,500 miles). This year I am "forced" to drive it daily since my other car has a cracked cylinder and is only used a few times a month until it is fixed
.
Barn996 (Steve??)....maybe I will see you this winter as this is the year I
plan
on taking up skiing. I'll probably only see you in the parking lot since you'll be on the expert section and I'll be on the starter slopes!
I bought this car because it makes me smile and it does that nearly every day. Here In the ATL, I do use my '03 4Runner on truly nasty storm days but I have still managed to enjoy putting just over 17,000 miles in 20 months of ownership and do not intend to reduce the smile factor anytime soon.
I drive it whenever I want, in rain/sleet/snow--a sports car is useless if it just sits in the garage, and the sooner I wear this one out, the sooner I can justify a new one.
And if anyone with a garage queen wants in on a little secret, the car shines up like new whenever I hose her off, and there isn't a big difference in value between a 'mint' condition 996 and an 'average' condition 996. They made a ton of these, so go get your money's worth out of it.
Once you get used to the clutch, driving it in the city isn't as bad as I imagined. It'd certainly have been an easier process with a more forgiving engagement though. I'm one of the lucky ones with access to a garage, street parking a nice car in most neighborhoods is asking for trouble. Maybe parts of Pac Heights...
But a city-driven car, even with a garage, you have to give up on bumper scratches and door dings whenever you leave said garage. Just a fact of life, thankfully this isn't a collector car or even one with much value left to lose.
i usually drive in dry weather - i also go way out of my way to avoid parking on the street or near other cars if i can help it - too many people these days don;t give a sh_t and park by "feel" and could care less about dinging bumpers or doors.
Trying to drive it as much as I can. With a family of 5, I cant exactly throw the kids in the back and go for a cruise...but I will be getting winters for it. Test these Nickies out in -40 weather.
If I found a ferry I would drive it on a boat.
I drive it when I need a coat.
I will drive it in the rain.
I will cross the tracks of the train.
I drive it in the the dark! I've parked under a tree!
I'll park next to another car! You will see!
I'm not sure how to drive it in a box.
I have not yet hauled a fox.
I will not leave it at my house.
I would run over a mouse.
I will drive it here or there.
I will drive it ANYWHERE!
You got it! I just spent $700.00 have a dent removed in the rear panel of the car. Apparently, the paintless dent people won't fool with the 996 rear panels because Porsche chose to use a double metal design (I guess to protect the engine) and they say they can't easily knock them out. Oh well.
But I'm like you, I try to find a good spot because people just don't care. It's unfortunate, but very true, especially at Walmart!
Very well done!
I drive it in the rain
I drive it on the plains
I drive it in the dark
I call mine Clark
I do so love my 996
Even though others call me a pri*k
(Old joke: What's the difference between a porcupine and a Porsche?
Answer: The ****** are on the inside with the Porsche.)
In my case, the 996 is strictly a "fun car". While I try to drive it as much as possible (nights, weekends etc...) In most cases for me, it's just impractical as I'm usually dragging a bunch of stuff around that just wouldn't work with the Porsche. In addition, my job provides me with a vehicle that's much more practical, so I usually end up driving it instead. If it's just driving from point A to point B (hopefully with some nice roads in between) the Porsche always gets the nod! - except in winter, as it's laid up in the garage (usually on jack stands) for maintenance...
