Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They have magnificent handling and engines and despite the horror stories, once sorted (all used cars need to be sorted) they are extremely reliable.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought my first Porsche, a 2001 C4 cabriolet, about a month ago. I have read so much scary stuff here, I have been apprehensive. Yesterday, I took it for a 200 mile drive through the Jemez mountains of Northern NM. Lots of Twisty roads, up to about 10000 ft in altitude. What a rush! The car ran like a top. I really had no idea what it would be like! Loved the way it sounded, and drove. I am so happy to have made this purchase. 55k miles, PO had the IMS, and the RMS done in the last 4000 miles. I plan to drive and enjoy. Anyway, just thought I would share....
I love posts like this. Congratulations and it looks like a very nice car.
Porsche, more than any other manufacturer I can think of, builds their sports car to be driven daily. Porsches aren't meant to be Sunday cars or weekend cars or even second cars. They are meant to be your daily drive it everywhere under any conditions car. They are built for people that like to drive.
At the first rally that Porsche officially supported, they brought one car. The driver (Vic Elford) went to check the spares and found there were none, just wheels and tires. When he asked Baron Huschke when the spares would arrive the response was typical of Porsche's philosophy, "But there are no spare parts, Porsches don't break." Maybe a little dramatic and sadly not quite true but the philosophy has never changed they are not garage queens and don't take to it well. They are not weekend cruisers. They like, even demand, to be driven.
Drive it, and drive it often. They are not fragile cars. They have magnificent handling and engines and despite the horror stories, once sorted (all used cars need to be sorted) they are extremely reliable. Most people that drive 911s find that long term the actual maintenance costs are lower than their other cars.
The scary stuff here is just that, scary stuff. These are now 15 year or so used cars. Because they are also a bargain they are also bought by many people that can't really afford them.
This is the same fate that befell the 308/328/etc. Ferraris for many years. The number of truly trashed 308s is astounding. You could buy it for 25k all day long but first time it was due for a cam belt service, "5k for a belt change? Forget it" same when it was due again.
We should not look at our 996s against other 20k cars, we should compare them to other top tier sports cars. Here is a direct email quote (edit to eliminate personal information) from a Ferrari Guy received in response to an article about the collapsing of the current Ferrari market bubble:
Enjoy!
I have other rides, but I do plan on making this one my daily driver. It was inexpensive enough, I don't worry about door dings etc... Gonna drive it, and enjoy it! I have a trusted mechanic here in Santa Fe that was taking care of the car before I purchased it, and currently Helps me with my '64 Triumph TR4. So I am used to cars that need to be maintained. Oh, and I had Ducati motorcycle untll recently. I guess I am a glutton for punishment.
chiliman you make me laugh. I kind of know where you are coming from as I have had TR3, TR4, AH Sprite, a couple of MG's etc. And currently own three Ducati's and a Norton Commando. Some days are
and others are
That is a beautiful car BTW:
lomax, and my wife is a blonde from Southern California. I just like stuff that is high maintenance, but exciting and sexy! Sounds like you have more space than me. I would love to have a "Jay Leno" garage sized space. So many cars, so little time!
I like the fact that your car has the original pumpkins. There is an easy DIY that link them to flash with your turn signals. You have a nice unmolested example of the 996 cab.
I drive the hell out of mine, and it's still happy as a lark. Keep it maintained and keep enjoying it.
My wife and I did about 250 miles in the 996 yesterday...and as usual, no surprises, just an awesome cruise up and down the coast.
Congratulations! I've found that it always seems faster with the top down. You can take spirited drives at lower speeds and still get the same thrill with less risk of getting ticketed.
Enjoy!
