Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use aluminum foil tape' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean foam won't fix the problem' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I then used black duct tape to tape the duct back up.

It seems to be piece of seal used for heating flap!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dears,
First, happy new year 2026 to all! just wish you plenty of health and happiness!!
Well, another issue with my old '98 996 C2: heater remains at full temp, despite of setting on automatic air conditioning system!
Clim on or off doesn't change anything.
Thru PIWIS, test system on air conditioner is OK.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Cleaning the foam won't fix the problem. The only way to fix the problem is to plug the holes in the blend doors, where the foam used to be before it disintegrated with age. It's not a hard job but it does require pulling out the center console and then cutting the into the ducts to get access to the blend doors so you can tape up the holes. While you're in there, you may want to vacuum out any remaining foam pieces but you never truly get all the foam pieces out.
An alternative method is to get to it via the frunk but I didn't go that route.
Do yourself a favor and go through the center console. Plenty of info on this procedure and when going through the center, you can get both blend doors. And use these plugs with a little RTV. It will save you a lot of time.

Piece of foam, retreived in the car!!!
It seems to be piece of seal used for heating flap! isn't it?
Then, what should be the best way to change it? passing thru the front or remove the heating radiator from the trunk?
Thanks for your suggestion!
Cheers.
Sorry I ignore how to let my picture displayed, instead of icon...
I just used a box cutter with a fresh blade. It cut through the plastic easily (wear protective gloves though just in case). I then used black duct tape to tape the duct back up. You can use the same aluminum tape but I was afraid you'd be able to see it through the vents after everything was put together.
Black duct tape might be better. I wouldn't want any paint that may gas off in the HVAC ducting. I can vouch that you won't be able to see the tape once everything is put back together.
That's right.
But as cut duct is far away inside the dashboard, no risk to see any alloy tape thru the opening.
Also, the tape is placed outside the duct, then not visible from inside.
I'll pass you some pics when we'll do it.
The metallic (foil) heating duct tape is best at staying in place. It is what I, and many others used. The Aero Alloy Tape sounds like a really good alternative. Regular cloth (black) duct tape gets warm and can loose its adhesive backing.
You cannot see the tape when the job is completed and everything is put back together. Don't forget to do both Blend Doors.
Dears,
Well, it's done!!
In fact, we've worked as follow: one inside to pass thru front opening/duct and fix the selection flap.
With my son, we have worked on the front by dposit the heating radiator and the mixing flap.
When undone, it's easier to apply alloy tape on both sides.
We were surprised by short time spe,nt to do it.
Definitely, we strongly think better to use both route to fix this problem.
What a pleasure to retreive cold and hot vent!!
The mixing flap undone, reapired in a first time in place, but finally undone to be properly covered.
Interior route, only to reach selection flap
