Help guys I was replacing the final drive seal from the transaxle as it had started to weep and on bolting back the flange that accepts the CV the bolt just snapped inside the diff.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Help guys I was replacing the final drive seal from the transaxle as it had started to weep and on bolting back the flange that accepts the CV the bolt just snapped inside the diff. Is it possible to easily separate the gearbox and diff or am I going to need a specialist shop?? I can do most things mechanical but never attempted a Porsche integrated transaxle.

POST 2Original post

Drill a hole and use an extractor. If that does not work, you will need a professional.

Bad idea. That bolt is inside the seal and u will contaminate the gearbox. The bolt piece is in the side gear of the carrier. U should remove cv's, the side cover and extract the carrier. Once on the bench u can drill the bolt and extract. If that doesnt work u can remove the ring gear and seperate the carrier to get much better access to the broken bolt. If should come out fairly easily as its bathed in oil and should have little torque on it. However u do it make sure its extreamly clean when reinstalled. Its not hard if u mechanically profficient and its just takes some time.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That was my plan. I was unsure how to proceed but now have finally found some info on dismantling the diff. as you say not particularly hard I just had never worked on this piece of my 996. appreciate the steer

POST 5Original post

I just had my limited slip carrier apart yesterday to measure the cluches. Its a g96 behind a mezger but the carrier is pretty much the same. U can see the part the bolt threads into here because i have the carrier split in half. Its basically like every other ls or fully locking carrier.

POST 6Original post

^^^^ Great photo showing the plates. Gives a great representation of why some plates wear worse than others, depending on metal composition. Theyre not super thick. Thank you, sir.

POST 7Original post

Just to clarify, this is from an unknown condition g96 diff and i was told the steels r pretty worn and the clutches r actually within spec but should be replace. I tested the engaugement torque and it was 90ft-lbs. This arrangement was identified as a 997 cup set up that they only made for a few years and is nla. Ill be buying 996 cup replacents or the Guards replacements. The cups have higher preload due to a belview(coned) washer on each side. I have been told both that the cup plates r the same as gt3 plate and that they r not, so im not sure what to buy. They do have different part numbers but porsche motorsports stuff is its own secret community. Racing Diffs makes a gt3 replacement pack but apperently the gt3 spec stuff is weak for the track. Might figure this out ine of these days.

Manual or Tiptronic transmission?

Its a manual and I figured it out thanks

POST 10Original post

and for the sake of the next DIYer, can you share what it is that you figured out?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Two things. First read the torque specs properly and second that the differential can be disassembled via the lLH side plate and you dont need to touch the gearbox ! once I have it fully complete I will aim to post some pics
