I ponied up on the fancy Rennline collars when I replaced the gearbox last summer.

I just had the car in at a local Porsche specialist and as part of their inspection they flagged the shifter cables as being worn and prone to either breaking or disconnecting from the transmission resulting in me being stranded.

I received a similar advice from a shop about the shifter itself: ie, just replace the bushings not the entire unit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I bought a 1999 Carrera 4 about 3 weeks ago. I just had the car in at a local Porsche specialist and as part of their inspection they flagged the shifter cables as being worn and prone to either breaking or disconnecting from the transmission resulting in me being stranded. They suggested to replace the cables with OEM ones. The car has 106k miles and had it's transmission rebuilt a few years ago but the whole shifting system appears to be original to the car. Just wanted to give it a quick sanity check with the community if this is truly an imminent repair. There were other things flagged such as the front shocks, brake/transmission fluid and some minor oil leaks so Im trying to think about how to prioritize these items
While not a ringing endorsement of this fix - its held on better than mine which has been plastic zip tied for 3 years and hasnt left me stranded yet. I think itll be fine but eventually youll probably want to address the worn shifter and replace cables at the same time.
My indie used zip ties on mine for years as a cheap insurance. I ponied up on the fancy Rennline collars when I replaced the gearbox last summer. Either way works fine.
If you decide to replace them there are at least two choices other than OEM; Function First, and Numeric Racing. Do some research to determine which might work best for you.
The plastic in the cable ends wear out, either at the shifter or the transmission and they pop off. You can tie wrap them, but they will continue to make the shifter sloppy as the play increases. Function First are a superior upgrade to OEM and improve the feel of the shifting without adding unwanted noise in the cabin, but OEM should perform just as well as the old ones did.
What's the benefit of upgrading the whole cable vs. replacing just the worn plastic bits with this:

I received a similar advice from a shop about the shifter itself: ie, just replace the bushings not the entire unit. So I wonder if the same idea applies to the cables?
I assume that its job is to prevent grime from entering the sheath. At my first glance, I would have said that its not important, but upon reflection it probably is. You could ziptie it (or wire it shut with baling wire) and try to continue using it.
