Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've got a 996.1 c2 manual from 2001 and it has a terrible ring and pinion bearing howl / whine. The engine is out RN, so I figured I'd get a used non rebuilt trans to throw in for rn.... The problem is that 9/10 transmissions for sale are c4 awd transmissions... I have a c2... I see so many ppl convert c4,c4s, or turbos to 2wd via removal of driveshaft and all other awd components leaving just the output shaft flange spinning freely under there... Also, I assume less wear on this if it was not tracked and c4 cars seem to tend to be driven less hard Idk. This would be a temp fix as I rebuild and put and LSD in my og c2 trans. Also, I have considered if the front wheel output shaft would interfere with the hoses, and it SEEMS to be fine but I am unsure. The transmissions seem to be very much identical. My other concern is the factory C4 diff... Would it be effectively the same type of torque splits and whatever as a c2? Thanks,

POST 2Original post

Just install the trans without attaching anything to the front output shaft. I'm not sure about clearing the coolant lines but imagine it would be ok.

POST 3Original post

Gear ratios and final drive (I.e. ring and pinion) ratio is identical AFAIK between C2 and C4 but best to check. Torque split is a term used on AWD/4WD powertrains to declare torque split between front and rear axle. The diff inside the C4 gearbox/transaxle to drive the rear wheels plays no role in that and is the same as the diff in a C2 gearbox. LSD can be fitted to both but I don't know if they were fitted to C4's. In case of LSD they have a split in locking percentage between driving and braking but that is not described by the term 'torque split'.

POST 4Original post

You wont have any issues. I ran my C4S without the driveshaft for a while. As long as the bolt pattern is the same on the bell housing, youre good. The AWD transmission is not an LSD. I believe a 997 transmission will bolt up? But I think the shifter assembly is on the opposite side of the trans.

POST 5Original post

I did this for a minute - Ran a C4 Transaxel in my C2 - the issue will be coolant lines in the C2 and the output shaft/flange of the C4 transaxel. In my car, I had to rig a strap to hold the rubber coolant line up off of the spinning flange. Wasn't a permanent fix for me. I just did it while I serviced the C2 tranny. If you can remove the flange it would be a cleaner install.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, lots of good info here. Especially from SoundnSpeed! hardtailer, thanks for letting me know about this. So I see the diagrams for the c2 vs c4 trans and I find that they share that same output shaft as well After hearing SoundnSpeed's bit about the hoses, i want to see if the flange can be removed. if so, id cap it or something. Let me do some research, thanks guys

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nice but it appears that the flange output shaft will still stick out, but I might be able to slice off the ears of the flange? I just dont want to induce a mis-balance. Thinking sitting tight for a c2 trans might be the way.

POST 8Original post

I thought the same about cutting the "ears" off of the flange because the interference is minimal - only about a 1/4"+/-.

POST 9Original post

A machine shop would rurn the ears off for a couple bucks and it will stay balanced and just be a spacer.
