Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was doing my first brake job on my 2001 996c4 today and found these metal shims on the back of all 8 brake pads. They are very thin steel and have tabs on 4 corners to hold them in place. I found one of the pistons had a broken off standard shim in the piston. It had a screw in it which I guess was done in an effort to remove it. I have a feeling these are an alternative shim system. It appears the previous pads were installed with brake grease between the plate and the pistons. Is that correct? Should it be between the pad and the shim? Has anyone ever seen these metal shims before? I think I can use them again in lieu of the stock ones. I see many people simply do not use the stock ones. I am using Textar pads. I appreciate any comments.

POST 2Original post

Are you sure they're steel? There are aftermarket shims made from titanium which are supposed to help with heat transfer into the calipers.

POST 3Original post

I believe these are to eliminate brake squeaks they probably came with that brand of pads when last installed

POST 4Original post

They came off the old pads, throw them out ,clean the caliper and install new pads.
