Hey guys, Im dealing with a stiff selector on my 1999 C2 trans (G96/00). With shifter cables disconnected, moving the selector arm across the gates (1-2 and 5-6) is stiff and it won't self-center to 3-4. Reverse has enough spring force to move out the reverse gate. Cables are off; stiffness is definitely at the trans. External linkage (crank arm at the trans) is lubed, no change. I fixed a "gummed up" 2nd gear detent recently, so I suspect internal varnish may the culprit here too, but perhaps springs or dentents? Has anyone freed up a "stiff" internal selector shaft or a stuck centering detent without a teardown? Any specific solvent or "flush" tricks? Thanks, P!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Mike, There could be an issue with the selector lever and associated bits that move shifting between the four planes. I've serviced G96 transmissions that have a lot of gunk or corrosion on the bushings in the case that the lever turns on. This is not a diagnosis, but a possibility based on your observations. Servicing the lever requires removing the transmission from the car, and the gear housing from the transmission. Access to the lever is a little tricky at this point, but it can be done without further disassembly.
Thanks Kevin! Appreciate the info. Might just have to wait until the next transmission pull if this is the case.
