I do love the Fabspeed quad tips I installed on the Fisters, but they are only cosmetic.

Suggestion
The expense of achieving CARB certification would make our product very expensive and the changes needed to accomplish it would make the performance and sound characteristics not what we are in the market to achieve.

We are awaiting core returns so we can build more mufflers and as soon as a set becomes available for your order we will send you an invoice for payment.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking to obtain a set of Fister Mufflers, I checked their site and apparently there is a back order, does anyone know of another avenue to obtain them? I love my 04-Cab, but the OEM mufflers are simply too quite. My oldest son is driving my 03 Targa with the Fabspeed Headers and Exhaust (Which I miss more than I can say) Any ideas to aid in my hunt for a better exhaust note, is much appreciated :-)
FYI - I do not have the means to buy another Fabspeed Exhaust currently (Which I feel sounds the best IMHO)
Call Darin directly and see what he can do.
I did this last week and he was able to get a pair of mufflers done in a couple of days. They shipped to me across the country and I received them on Monday. Installed yesterday.
I love the sound. Even my wife likes it. She says that the car "purrs" when just cruising around but "growls" when we hit the loud pedal.
I had to take a pic of one before they went on.
Do this. Darin is all about customer service. There's demand for his mufflers because they sound great, look great (if you care about that kind of thing), and he stands by his customers.
Be a bit patient - it'll be worth the wait.
I took a look at the Fister site. I do not see anything that indicates there is a backorder. Are you sure you are looking at the right site?

Yup, it's best to hit up your local Vato Loco Latino joint. For an even easier upgrade, just remove your rear bumper and drive it in there like that to have them do it while the mufflers are still on the car. Saves about 2-3 hours of install time.

I received an email from them (Fister) advising me of the back order status - see below:
Doctor Richard,
Thank you for your order. Currently the mufflers for your car are very popular and we

Have you thought of buying used cores and sending them to Darin? Plenty of ebay stores have them. Once you get them back sell your core cans to someone or even sell them to Darin.
I have an extra pair for sale from my 02 cab with 60k miles. I could mail them to you then you can mail them to Fisters shop. That's what I did and he turned them around within a week. He just does not have the cores on hand.
Hi all,
I just purchased an '04 996 this week, (introduction thread is forthcoming as soon as I get the detailing completed to my satisfaction), and I had a Top Speed exhaust on the old Boxster (I know, cheap Ebay stuff but it was just the mufflers and just for some extra vroom.)
Already in the few days I have had the 996 I am missing that nicer, beefier sound. While admittedly, the Top Speed system left much to be desired, what with the resonance at highway speed, etc. it has left me not wanting to put a cheapo Chinese on this car, but also not having a Fabspeed (have one on my 951, love the sound) or similar system high on the "spend money on" list as of yet, too many other goodies/projects, I really like the idea of this mod.
But, A couple questions for those of you in the know,
1. What diameter pipe is used to bypass? Is there a certain size or is it a case of the bigger the pipe the more sound? Is there a minimum size?
2. Is there any immediate drawbacks to this mod? Resonating in the cabin or anything like that?
3. Just how good is the sound? I see here most say it's a great difference but what is the difference compared to a full system? I understand a full system will be a far larger difference, but I'm more looking for a whole "on a scale of 1-10" thing, 1 being stock, 10 being a full header to tip "fab speed or such" system.
Thanks in advance guys.
Johnboy, there are dozens of threads about the Fister mod. I had Fabspeed Supercups on my 993, and absolutely loved them, although most people would likely consider them too much for street use. When I got my 996, I put Fisters on the car. It has a really nice sound, but not obnoxious. Absolutely no drone, in fact on the highway at speed with the windows up I really don't hear much difference from stock. Windows down, under load, it is throaty and sounds like a halfway compromise between stock and something like my previous Supercups. I will keep the Fisters for now, but likely move on to something more aggressive when I find a good option. Anyone selling a used set of 996 Supercups cheap? I do love the Fabspeed quad tips I installed on the Fisters, but they are only cosmetic.
Take the car and some of these pics to a local muffler shop - chances are someone can do the modification for you. That's what I did. So-called "Gundo hack." Maybe not exactly the same as Fister, but sounds great.
John, I will be calling you today, the Fabspeed Muffers I found on EBay were cracked, therefore I am going to the source, not to mention, I believe Fabspeed Exhaust sound the best on all P-Cars, but that's just me
David23 - I would Highly suggest you go with the Fabspeed Maxflow Exhaust, I have them on my 03 Targa with the Headers, BEST SOUNDING Exhaust I heard from a 996 - No Doubt!
Thank you for the kind words! It was great chatting with you yesterday, and very much look forward to meeting up with you in person. Hoping you can make the track day!
David, have you thought about bumping up the sound level of your current mufflers by upgrading your factory cats? They are the biggest restriction point of the car, and our Sport Cat X-Pipe is a fantastic compliment to a muffler setup. Brings the sound level up a nice amount and adds a bit more aggressiveness and burble to the exhaust.
Is the Maxflow louder than the Fisters? I've only heard videos of the MF, and it is very difficult to tell what it actually sounds like. I'd love to hear one in person.
Yes they are a bit louder than the Fisters, although the throatier/deeper exhaust note is much more apparent. If you are looking for overall sound level increase, our X-Pipe will be the greatest bang for the buck.
Thanks John, I'm in California, so I need to be able to pass Smog. Your website indicates the Sport Cat X pipe will not pass the Calif visual inspection. I do like the idea of retaining the distinctive flat six sound, I noticed a lot of aftermarket mufflers lose that quality.
Thats a tough one, unless you have someone to pass you visually every two years CARB would require reinstallation of your factory cats with the certification stamp. Ours would pass a sniff test however.
Here some nice clips of the Maxflo (996/997 is the same setup), let me know what you think
Brothers, Trust me when I say, once you hear and experience the Fabspeed Exhaust, everything else, simply doesn't sound as good within the price point of the Fabspeed Platform. Again, only my two cents, you can keep the change
I thought it was determined they were gundo hacks instead of fisters?
And +1 on the Fabspeed Catless X-Pipe. It's really really good. Totally worth uninstalling and reinstalling every 2 years.
Vandersmith sold them to me as "fisters" but I'm not really sure. I have seen too many threads on peoples interpretation of Gundo vs. Fister. Could be based on how quiet my car is... only time you can hear my exhaust is in a downtown area or canyons... wide open roads I just hear my intake (which makes a nice noise)
-I am going After Hours Exhaust more than likely
Not just the cat core is CARB certified it is the entire product piping and all. The expense of achieving CARB certification would make our product very expensive and the changes needed to accomplish it would make the performance and sound characteristics not what we are in the market to achieve. We look into it every few months or so to see if anything ever changes to try and go for it, unfortunately no such luck yet.
Just an update for those interested in Getting Fister modded cans from Fd motorsports. I ordered a set from Darin today, they will be going out early next week. So they must have received some core returns. I am returning my stock mufflers after I install the new ones.
The entire assembly has to be CARB certified. It's a racket; I think CARB intentionally makes the process difficult AND expensive to minimize how much work they have to do.
Just did this on my 99 with a 3.4-->3.6 motor. Cost me $60 at a local exhaust shop with the mufflers pre-removed by me. Looking forward to hitting the road and interstate this weekend to check it out.
