The only way to get the metal cable to reach further is to change the routing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I find myself with the same problem from a 5 years old post. I have a 1999 996 coupe 6 speed. Took things apart to replace leaking fuel lines in the engine bay. And in doing so I somehow created a throttle cable that is too short (pic attached). I had the throttle cable in and out of the car two or three times and I'm convinced my current routing of the cable from the housing to the throttle body is correct. Everything lines up perfectly except I'm still a quarter inch or so too short. And when I start the car it tries to redline and thus immediately have to shut it down. If the butterfly is allowed to close by disconnecting the throttle cable at the throttle body, the car starts and runs fine. So the problem from the previous post turned out to be at the pedal end which I haven't really even considered up to this point since I haven't messed with that part of the equation. Would something in the peddle box account for a whole quarter inch or so of cable? Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

POST 2Original post

One time I was in the same predicament. Undo the throttle cable from the TB. Give it a good yank to seat the black plastic holder in the TB frame. Worked for me.

. Yes I read your post and not sure I understand how that would work for me or make the actual metal cable any longer. I'm a good quarter inch short of the butterfly closing completely and the throttle body seated on the threaded stop.

POST 4Original post

The outer sheathing has to sit properly in the TB housing, such that the locking tab can actually lock and secure the sheathing to the TB housing. If you can turn the throttle plate by pulling on the sheathing towards the fire wall/ in the direction of travel, then it doesn't sit properly. The difference is typically the 1/4" your cable is seemingly too short. HTH. ETA: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/1208211-throttle-cable-too-short.html#post16839741 Pic shows that the upper tab has not sprung upward yet, therefore it's not seating properly. But I read in the other thread that you've checked that already. Resurrect just one thread in the future, please. That saves us all from putting effort in vain, by posting the same hint in the simultaneously running threads by different contributors

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to everyone that responded, it really helped. I finally did get the cable routed such that the throttle plate closes completely like it should at idle. The exact routing of the cable from the junction housing under the car to the back of the throttle body is the critical part of this. There is no actual adjustment on the metal cable within the sheathing. I agree that getting the sheathing to seat correctly behind the throttle body square grommet clip does provide a smooth path for movement of the cable, but at least in my case, that would not provide another quarter inch or so of length of the metal cable. The only way to get the metal cable to reach further is to change the routing. For added information, here's a picture of the housing junction under the car that connects the long cable from the throttle body to the short cable going to the accelerator pedal.

POST 6Original post

Great that you found the cause for it and reported it here. Did you happen to take pictures of the correct routing that you'd like to share here for future reference?

I will get some pics of the routing soon and post them.

POST 8Original post

Check the orientation of the black square stop piece against the metal bracket. If you accidentally flipped it 180 degrees (like I did after servicing the starter), it doesn't sit flush. It's because that square piece has a bevel and can only align one way to be flush:

Finally got around to getting back under the car and took a couple of pictures of how I routed my throttle cable that fixed my issue.
