Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have replaced the thermostat, leaking heater core and bled the cooling system.

The servo motor in my car was tested with a Snap On Solus scan tool.

I covered the rest of the flapper door with the aluminum HVAC tape, and used a layer of duct tape around the outside edges to give it a little thickness.

Suggestion
I'll take mine apart this weekend to check for the foam problem.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 996. Last winter, the heater worked. Now it is 17f and no heat.
Following the thread here
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...g-no-heat.html
I see the picture, but cannot find the flap.
I have verified the thermostat is working, and the heater core is getting hot.
Just need some help to locate the flap. Is it in the passenger footwell?
Many thanks,
Grant in cold Georgia
I'm looking into the same problem on my '04 C4S Cab. I have replaced the thermostat, leaking heater core and bled the cooling system.
The servo motor in my car was tested with a Snap On Solus scan tool. I can turn on the servo motor which is located behind the radio/CD stack and watch it open and close. I still have no heat.
The picture from the aforementioned thread is looking downward from the heater core well under the front hood. I have yet to take the cover off of the heater core to see if this flap is moving when heat/cold is selected. Perhaps the flapper door broke away from the servo motor arm in your car as well as mine?
I love driving my car in the cold - but right now it's freezing!
Thanks Kderry. I remove the center vent and look for the flay to so if it is moving. I forgot to mention, I have had thin black foam coming out of the side vents.
Great info here:

There are several flaps with foam on them, so the foam could be coming from any.
That's a great thread, thank you! I'll take mine apart this weekend to check for the foam problem. Looking at the doors in the picture it's easy to see why this problem will occur. Doors with holes in them? I've taken apart many cars over the years and this is the first I've ever seen with this design.
I sometimes forget just how many parts and designs cross over to other Porsche models. Time to widen my searches in the future!
I removed the heater core this week and found this:
All of the foam covering the door has long since disintegrated. I re-covered the door with an aluminum HVAC tape. I was feeling optimistic, til the ride home. Still no heat. Looks like I have to keep going.

Did you ever fix your heater problem?

I finally stumbled across this thread, and a PDF from RennTech.
I didn't realize when I covered the door with tape previously, there was a whole other half of the door I couldn't see.
I followed the procedure from the aforementioned PDF and was able to remove the entire flapper from the heater box through the opening for the heater core.
This was done by removing both the upper and lower pivot bushings for the flapper door.
Sure enough.
I covered the rest of the flapper door with the aluminum HVAC tape, and used a layer of duct tape around the outside edges to give it a little thickness.
I have heat!
I wasn't able to drive it much this winter, I just gained another daily driver!
