Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I discovered this push bottom under a cover by my wipers. I have not found any info on the web so I am hoping someone here recognizes it. I badly want to press it of course, to see what happens. I have resisted so far, but I am getting weaker. 2004 996 Targa

For towing your car... Puts the Porsche in "transport mode" and only Porsche can reset it. It allows the car to be locked but doesn't cause the car to set off the alarm from motion in tow and minimizing battery drain by restricting current draw from electrical components.

POST 8Original post

I believe it's just a stud and nut holding down that plastic cowling strip. (I'm just saying that to keep you from pushing that button. You don't really want to know what happens if you push it)

POST 9Original post

Pushin' that button will cause you $80 - $100. But it's your money. ha! In fact, take a video of you pushing it. Then keep recording while you enter the car and see if anything is different. If the dome lights don't come on, then... it's Porsche tax time!

POST 15Original post

Every time you press that button the arc that the wipers wipe clocks 1 degree towards the driver side. Depress it for 5 seconds and they rotate 1 degree the other way. Makes it so your can be adjusted to cover as much of your sight lines as possible.

I pushed it and the WHOLE FRONT FELL OFF!! WTF???

POST 22Original post

That's not a button - it's a grease nipple. All of the grease fittings throughout the car are connected to it. Find a high-volume pneumatic grease gun, connect it to that nipple, and pump at least a pint of grease. Some may leak out around the edges; this is normal.

POST 29Original post

Rushed home to examine my car and guess what? Mine has *two* buttons, one on the left side and one on the right side!!! What does this mean?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 13925594

That you have two nipples?

POST 31Original post

So we have a wiper sweep control, a tow mode that requires payment of your first born to reset and the infamous nuclear option, so, which is it? Damn, I hope I don't have those buttons!

POST 32Original post

I have a special tool in development for the 996 Nipple Adjustment. 996NA patent pending. Highlight of my class on how to use the tool will include.... I cant tell you yet! A sneak peak at part of what you will learn; DO NOT push on the nipple but gently turn and adjust, slowly... Repeat as maybe require.

POST 36Original post

Blinker fluid bleed nipples... If your blinkers are operating too slowly. Not typically a problem in US 911's due to the infrequency of blinker usage.

Left bank right bank blinker fluid reservoir.

POST 38Original post

I found today "Transport Mode" started with the 997's.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 13925735

I took your advice about the "two nipples". I was careful to follow your instructions and NOT push but rather, gently turn the nipple slowly, working my fingers in a circle pattern. As I kept doing this, I started to hear weird moaning type noises coming from the engine. The car got too hot to hold and it's lights were flashing. Scared the fool out of me when it started to smoke, but realize it was calming down. Whoosh! Not messing with those buttons again.

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

B3freak, good observation, I have two buttons as well. I pushed the one on the drivers side today. I will test the passenger side maybe tomorrow.

POST 42Original post

I cant recall laughing this hard out loud on any forum... Could be the best thread ever!

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK I guess we can wrap this mystery up. It is not a button. I don't know what it is but I got my nerve up and pressed it today. No moving parts, it is a FAKE button. I suspect that it was an option and the first owner did not order it so they fill it in with a fake button just like my console. I am checking EBay to see if I can get a used one or cheap Chinese one. If I find something i will write up the installation. I will be sure to put on it the dyno and see how many more hp I get.
