The 02 I just bought had the transmission out for an RMS, clutch, tranny rebuild and replaced IMS shaft seals, but the dealer didn't do the IMS.

It's up to you, but these are old cars and there's some plastic parts you want to replace while the engine is out for the IMSB.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys,
After some extensive research and beating the 996 vs 997 to death in my head I have decided that a locally owned 996 is worth making an offer on. It is a 2001 with 64k and a 6 speed. The car has service records, and the most recent being RMS, clutch, tires, brakes all done within the last 2 years. The IMS was never done, which is kind of mind boggling for me because they did the RMS. I have read and scoured almost every thread on the issue, and if purchasing the vehicle I would elect to have the IMS done. What is a real world number for this service $1500? Thanks - Steve
If you will be getting the service records that implies that its a private sale. If so, ask them why they didn't do the IMSB.
I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is that they went in to do it, found that it has a dual row, and decided to not mess with it.
The price will vary depending on where you have it done, but $1500 is in the ballpark.
I'd rather have an unmolested car myself, in most cases (IMS not done), especially if done recently. Just because I know somebody hasn't tried to put a bandaid on a problem engine.
Sounds like a good prospect to me, pending further inspection and dependent on price. Yes, if I was the original owner I might have done it when the clutch/RMS was done, but no harm really. I paid about $1,800 when I had mine done, IIRC.
When I was shopping I got a quote of $3,000 for the IMS Solution + installation if I remember correctly. So that aligns with the other's quoting roughly $1200 or so in labor.
The big question is... what is the asking price for this 996 beaut for? Do you have the ad we can examine for you?
Have you considered having a PPI carried out on the car BEFORE you hand over the money or even making an offer?
Remember, you could be purchasing a ticking time bomb! literally!
Asking price is $19,900. I have considered having a PPI, and the owner is fine with it. I'm familiar with the purchase process of expensive toys...I currently own 2 boats, and the engine survey alone for the recent purchase was over $3,000 with oil analysis.
Best of luck getting the car. The 02 I just bought had the transmission out for an RMS, clutch, tranny rebuild and replaced IMS shaft seals, but the dealer didn't do the IMS. That was at 77K miles. I bought the car with 108K miles. Have no idea why mine wasn't done either...

Some folks get quotes $4k for an IMSB, so they opt not to do it, or hope that it just won't fail. But I use an Indy or would do it myself and save half the money.
Congrats on the car - sounds nice overall
It's up to you, but these are old cars and there's some plastic parts you want to replace while the engine is out for the IMSB. It should save you some labor costs in the long run. AOS, Coolant Expansion Tank, Water Pump, hoses, belts are somethings that come to mind. Congrats on the purchase.
