The fresh bolts on the headers and the super clean engine make me think it's a replacement.

As for the hit to the sump pan, it's easy enough to replace for $200 if you ever need to.

Ha it doesn't look like it was driven in the snow at all, pretty sure Bend uses crushed rock to melt snow like Hood River does.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

TLDR; I bought a car across the country sight unseen and drove it 2800 miles home.
Like many of you, Ive wanted to own a 911 for as long as I could remember. My wife and jokingly agreed years ago that we would make it happen before I turned 40. Over the years I reminded her that I wasnt joking though. 😏
Well the time had finally come. With two years to spare we decided now is a better time than any.
I didnt have a specific spec in mind, and I was flexible on color combinations except I knew I didnt want a grey interior. I wouldnt say no to an automatic although as it got more serious I leaned towards a manual for the ease of access to the RMS and all of that.
So the search began, although it had begun year ago as I was always kind of looking.
Oh and the other catch, ideally the car I found wasnt right down the street. I wanted to travel to it and drive it home. I wanted that maiden trip and I wanted it with my dad. He was the one that got me into cars and just retired from the auto-body industry and I wanted to make that trip home with him.
After a few misses I finally landed on one that seemed to tick enough of my boxes.
- It was within budget
- Black on black
- Manual (with no 2nd gear issues)
- OEM headlights & taillights
Now here is where the question of if Im crazy comes into play. The car, was located in Oregon and Im in North Carolina. I know I wanted to roadtrip it home but woah! I asked my dad if that was too far for him and he said, screw it lets go get it.
So thats exactly what we did! After a few convos with the seller I found out there wasnt much history on the car because he got it from an estate sale where he bought about 15 Porsches. He replaced the clutch and tires and did an oil change. He said he had put about 1,500 miles on it himself but thats about it. He provided me some driving videos and a walk around video and thats about it.
I treated it as if it were a BAT auction that I wouldnt be able to vet out in person. I put a lot of trust in him and what he said about it and that it came from a collector of sort and sat for a few years before it was recently acquired.
It needs some TLC (starter gets heat soaked and wont start, AC needs looking at) but overall I think I stole this thing. It just drove 2,841 miles without a single hiccup. Drives so smooth, suspension doesnt feel too warn out, shifts smooth, temperature and oil pressure solid the whole way! The engine looks like someone went through it. It is the cleanest engine Ive ever seen on a 996 as if they dry ice cleaned it. On top of that my obd reader said cam deviation was +3 and 0.
Yeah it was a huge risk and I got massively lucky. But Im so pumped to be home and start to look through it. Ill send an oil sample off to get checked and continue on other stuff.
Bonus: the option sticker says it was optioned with a limited slip differential and sport suspension. 👀
Glad to be apart of the club!
Fortune favors the bold. Congratulations on acquiring such a stunning example, as well as successfully trekking across the country. I like those 17 inch wheels.
And your smiles speak volumes.
Congrats and welcome to the “club”!
Having those Porsche experiences with your dad is a priceless memory. Sure makes me glad I have similar memories of my dad.
Awesome! Welcome to the madness of owning a 25 year old car! Glad you found the forum. All kinds of good things here. Epic trip! Don't smile too much driving it...
In case anyone was curious of what I meant about the engine was super clean. This is what I meant. Looks like someone had a close call with that oil pan though. 👀
Congratulations on the car and the "excellent adventure" getting it home! That sump plate hit probably would have caused a leak, which means someone has removed and resealed it since that happened. Not surprising on a car with some history.
I have seen a lot if oil pains that ha e looked like that. I got ly car very cheap because the pan and case was cracked and car was inop. Just got a new pan off ebay and welded the crack and the car was good to go. Enjoy

Never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy. Great first chapter. You will be happy. You are doing it with the right mentality and the memory of driving across country with your dad is priceless and worth the adventure in itself.
Cool car! Got some sweet options and it looks very clean.
cheers!
That the way to do it. I did similar with my 4S, but a bit closer to home. Few to Richmond, VA. exchanged money for car and drove it non stop to South Florida. After arriving I was disappointed the drive was so short. Since then its been nothing but fun. Enjoy!!!!!
Love it! And an absolute beauty with the black on black! Plus a real win with LSD and m030!
I can relate to the long drive, trusting the owner, and driving it home on hopes and prayers (after prior owners mechanic gave me warm and fuzzy)
My drive was Tucson AZ to South Bend IN.
Thank you! Yeah, overall the paint looks pretty solid; the hood has a bunch of white specs that you can feel with your finger.
The guy I bought it from said it was stored in a big barn with a car cover that was wrapped up so not sure what caused those marks.
Either way, since pops just retired from the auto-body industry I think he'll have time to try to buff it out or we will do a fresh pass on the hood :-)
Congratulations!
Fantastic way to start this journey.
This forum is such a great source of information - search for any issue you have and you'll likely find a post about it here.
Enjoy in good health!
If it doesn't start when hot, it's most like the "Y" cable, just Google it.
FYI, I bought my car in Reno NV and drove it home around Thanksgiving in the snow! Was awesome! Did not do an inspection, 12 years later, it's still a great car.
Thank you! Yes this forum has been super helpful already.
That sounds pretty epic as well! I think the Y Cable is good since there isn't any visible breaks or corrosion. I just replaced the starter last night and so far so good; nothing but strong startups!
