Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have an 01 C4 that I absolutely love driving. Saw a 981 base for sale and drooled over the pics. Then I started imagining for just a few dollars more than mine, I could own a 13 year newer car that just looks amazing. Havent driven a Cayman in years so what am I missing and what do you think of the idea?
Id much rather have a 996 than a 981, but its possible we dont share the same values and priorities. Go with your heart, but do spend some time with a 981 (renting on Turo, etc.) to see if thats what you truly desire.
I have a 2014 981 Cayman S 6MT and I'm picking up a 2002 996 C4s this week.
The 981 is almost perfect. It is a great blend of modern tech and analog driver engagement. Really well balanced with a fantastic transmission and super responsive engine. The 9A1 engine's realiability is an added peace of mind. My biggest gripe with the car is the tall gearing -- it is great on the track but really limiting in street driving. The engine has a lot of character and sounds great (PSE is a must!), but really needs to be rev'd out to get any significant power, which combined with the tall gearing makes it a compromise for the streets. In comparison, I found that the 996 (at least the .2) has a much more torquey mid range. The EPS on the 981 also leaves a bit to be desired, especially compared to the 996's hydraulic rack.
Overall, they are both very different cars with their own unique quirks. Going from the 996 to the 981 will be an exciting new experience for sure.
OP - Go drive a base and an S. Base is a momentum car for the reasons ncster notes. S has a little more oomph. Any 996 has great throttle response with a nice mid range torque band. A Cayman GTS is where I personally enjoy the ‘Cayman experience’.
I also added a 996 C4S after owning a 981 S for a bit. My 981 is PDK and my 996 is manual though which is a big difference.
For me the 981 is the "better" car: faster, lighter, more precise balance/handling, more comfortable, quieter inside, much more modern. To the point that it's maybe almost too faultless, if that's even possible.
The 996 is more "special": more engaging, more analog/connected, more feel, and I kind of prefer driving it. Almost makes the 981 feel numb in areas like inputs and ride when I drive them back to back (even though it really isn't vs other modern cars).
But these things could be negatives depending on what you're looking for. I don't have a daily commute so all my driving is for fun. Definitely try test driving one and see what you prefer.
