Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As well, I've checked the levels in the differentials and they appear to be in good shape.
Leading evidence: 'Check levels in the differentials and they appear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check levels in the differentials and they appear' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Note: I did check all of the related fuses, and they appear to be in good working order.

A good idea, but I did check the shifter cable and it appears to be properly connected, as I can hear and feel the tranny shift into P, D or R just as it normally would.

So, I cleaned the speed sensor and wheel hub to see if that cured the problem with no luck.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello to all. The car is a 00' 996 C4 Cab with 60K miles and has always been garaged, as well as, maintained. The trans fluid/filter were properly changed one year ago and double-checked again this week to ensure the level is correct. There are no leaks nor abnormal noises. So, I was surprised to have this tricky tranny issue arise.
The Problem: The car starts/runs fine, but when I put it into Drive, I can hear/feel the gear shift into D mode exactly as it would normally do. However, it will barely move forward/reverse on level ground, even when considerably raising the rpms. The same also applies when shifting into reverse. The problem exists in both Auto and Manual modes.
Note: The night before this issue occurred. The car ran and shifted perfectly. But, it was raining but didn't seem to have any effect on performance. That same night, everything was normal when I parked the car in the garage. The next morning, this mystery problem occurred out of nowhere. So, I'm completely confused and clearly need help on this doozy.
FYI: I only have OBD diagnostics, mid-level mechanic experience, and a fairly extensive set of hand tools
Far fetched perhaps but could it be that all brake pads on all 4 wheels are sticking to the brake disks after driving through the rain and then parking the car?
Or some electric issue where moisture has gotten into the connector of the automatic gearbox.
First, thanks for your responses. I appreciate the suggestions.

But, I did notice one of the CV axles leaking a bit of grease around the boot. So, I cleaned the speed sensor and wheel hub to see if that cured the problem with no luck.
I do think there's a chance one of the tranny connectors may have taken in some water and possibly corroded overnight. I'll continue checking all of the wiring. Note: I did check all of the related fuses, and they appear to be in good working order.

Today, I rented a durametric scanner from Ebay, which may shed some light on this mystery issue.
Do the lights on the dash follow the shift lever? If the lights don't match the lever the transmission TCU won't operate any of the hydraulic solenoids.
Curious if this was ever solved. Having the same issue with a 986 2.7 tiptronic. Shfter will shift, indicates the correct gear on the dash, but no movement from the car. There is sometimes a little movement with higher revs, but nothing substantial.
There is fluid leakage around the axle boot and transmission pan. Assuming a lack of fluid is causing the torque converter to not work? Or sensors or solenoid aren't working. Car only has 89k miles, but hasn't been running for some time.
Given that you have leaking fluid near the pan, I would assume your automatic transmission fluid is leaking. Confirm the fluid level, top it off if necessary, and try again.
