Then the guy tells me he thinks it's clean enough to be Porsche Certified on their lot.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought my 2000 996 C2 from 1600Veloce on BAT in March 2021. When I got the title, I was, in fact, buying it from Carvana. Over the last 5 years, I have received emails from Carvana offering to buy the car at various prices. Earlier this year, I got and offer of $13,800 - well below the $24,000 I paid. I wasn't interested in selling so no big deal. Today I received a Carvana email with an indicated value of $18,500. "Your Porsche is in high demand!" So what is there tactic. I would consider selling it at that price. It's a garage queen (<1K miles a year) and has been an absolute joy to drive, but it's time for a new experience and I don't want to go through the BAT or Cars and Bids BS. Anyone have experience with Carvana? TIA.
I used to work for Carvana. Was one of their market operations managers. If you're selling to Carvana, no catch, they pay pretty well for vehicles. Their bread and butter though is selling vehicles with astronomical interest rates to poor credit, ill informed customers. After seeing the stuff we would pass through I would never, ever buy from Carvana without an extremely thorough VIN check and after purchase inspection. Probably not even then. Would sell to them though if the price is right. Just be prepared to see the Carvana driver burn your clutch and scrape your bumper loading it up lol.
$18,500? Is your car a Tiptronic convertible with high miles?
Any unsolicited offer from a dealership is going to be lower than market value, Yes Carvana does tend to make higher offers than anyone else, (I'm a broker and I deal with them and all sorts of dealers every day), but they are still a dealer trying to make money. That practice almost drove them out of business a few years ago, but they have since come back down a bit. Making their profit on financing is also a large part of the equation.
But 18500 sounds low for a "garage queen", what are the specs on your car?
Well Tips and Cabs always sell less than coupe manuals, but if the IMS has been done on yours I'd want at least 20k for it, assuming no accident history and original paint. I would put a coupe Tip one rung above a manual Cabriolet as far as value. Color combo also plays a big part as well, rare > common. Cabs have the added expensive maintenance of the fabric top and hydraulics to factor in as well. There are actually quite a few factors that affect value on these old 996s!
It may be worth to go to Carmax and get their offer as a comparison. They are no charge - possibly even can do it online.
I sold a nondescript Mercedes to Carmax and it was the most seamless car transaction I have experienced. I received the upper range trade in (not retail) book value which was worth it to me.
Thats trade in value and sounds like a reasonable offer for a tip coupe.
Like several others have mentioned, try Carmax. I did that a few years ago with my wifes old Mercedes. It was a fairly painless experience and I got a fair amount for it.
If you want top dollar and enjoy conversing with morons, sell it privately.
I tried selling my 2017 Macan Turbo on PCA, Rennlist, FB Marketplace, and other places. Got a quote of $24K from Carvana.
You can lump Carvana, CarMax and all car dealers in the same group: They buy low and sell as high as they can for profit. Nothing wrong with that, they are for profit businesses.
The Porsche Plano sales rep I dealt with told me that some guy wanted to trade in his 993. They were close to agreement when the dealer found out it was a salvage title (and had about 6 shades of yellow paint; not a lovingly restored total loss). Dealer offered him $5000 for it and if the deal had gone through, sales rep told me they would have taken it to the wholesale market.
I ended up taking my Macan to the Chevy dealer (don't dwell keep reading!) where I bought it and asked for an outright purchase price. They were at $26.5k after a couple of phone calls. Took it to the local Porsche/Mercedes/BMW dealership and they offered $27.5k. I thought it was worth more so kept it on the market. Went back to the Porsche et al dealer a month later and took $26.5k just to get rid of it. Then the guy tells me he thinks it's clean enough to be Porsche Certified on their lot. Ok, thanks.
I recommend you take your 996 to your local Porsche dealer and ask what he'll give you for it. Can't hurt. Start a conversation, you might find out some interesting information.
Also, tell your indy repair shop that you are selling it. He knows a lot of people, some of whom might be interested.
Lastly, I recommend a search on AutoTempest.com. It is an aggregator, covers a ton of websites (autotrader, cars.com, etc etc) including Craigslist and FB Marketplace, all nationwide if that's what you search for. You can see what comparable 996's are going for, retail and wholesale. The best place for comps is Classic.com which aggregates results from member used car lots as well as BAT. They do the comparables search for you. Very helpful. Good luck!
If you're decided on selling, $18-19k is a perfectly valid offer just to have it out of your hands with no strings attached. Carvana is relatively straightforward to sell to, as others have said it's the buying-from where you have to be really careful.
That sounds like a bit more than dealer wholesale pricing to me... BUT it's an easy way to be done with it quickly, not deal with any hassles/goofy buyers and just move on.
That's probably what I would've sold mine for as a private seller but for reference, in Sept 2023 my 99 coupe, 6-spd with 115k was destroyed in a flood event and State Farm (not exactly known for being generous) paid 26.5k for it.
It was in good condition prior but I was pretty shocked at how good their initial offer was because I don't think I could've sold it for that myself.
I sold a Bronco to Carvana and it was an easy process at what I thought was a decent price. I sold my Boxster several months ago, first I had it listed privately but eventually decided to to get numbers from Carvana and Carmax. Their prices were quite low so I went online to Kelly Blue Book to look up the various values (private sale, retail value, trade-in). They came back with a much higher value that included an offer from 3 local dealerships to buy it at that price. I picked one, Autonation, and sold it to them. Might be worth a look.
$18.5k for a tip from a blind corporate buyer is a killer offer imo. Sell it and get a manual. Youll have a hell of a time trying to sell it yourself.
100% agree. I sold my wife's 3 series to Carvana in the past. Tow truck showed up with check in hand and all other DMV docs. Easy process so I didn't mind trying to get maximum profit for the vehicle.
I sold a
modified Audi RS7
to Carvana. Next day I got a call from a tow-truck shop telling me I owed $3,000 for towing a totaled Audi RS7 at 2:30AM. Apparently one of their employees decided to take it for a middle of the night joy ride.
