Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I asked why they used Mobil 5-50 instead of factory recommendation and they asserted that LN actually recommends this weight.
Leading evidence: 'Use mobil 5-50 instead of factory recommendation and they asserted' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend their 5w50 classic oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Even Porsche recognized that 20+ years later these engines needs a different oil and recommend their 5w50 Classic oil for the 996.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, I'll admit it I don't have a clue.
After being here for a couple months and BaT batted about , I give up. I can't place it (and watch it staring right into my face)
Speaking of BAT, this is the kind of nonsense that is allowed to flourish. I asked why they used Mobil 5-50 instead of factory recommendation and they asserted that LN actually recommends this weight. This is a lie, and I merely responded with a link to the LN page on the topic. They have, of course removed this comment.

Well, you should know better than to make an oil related comment. Mind as well be politics or religion. The factory also recommended that you change your oil every 15k miles or two years and oil filter every 30k miles or 4 years. That didn't work out too well. People followed that and then wonder why we had all the IMS and bore scoring related issues.
Did you see me questioning their maintenance schedule or arguing that Porsche recommendations are always to be followed? No. Ive never seen anyone argue for 5-50 especially in winter in the NE. The bigger issue is the quick assertion/lie about LN Engineering or really anyone switching their official recommendation to that weight.
Well, I have ran that weight for the last 3-4 years, all year round, living in the DC area where it does get relatively cold. I also have 3-4 years of used oil analysis showing very low wear and just exemplary numbers all around. A modern synthetic 5W oil will provide proper flow down to -30F and we see nothing close to that. Even Porsche recognized that 20+ years later these engines needs a different oil and recommend their 5w50 Classic oil for the 996.
Two things:
1. You literally just trashed Porsche recommendations.
2. While this is interesting, Im talking about a car salesman claiming this is LN Engineerings recommendation, not Porschesbut again, interesting.
so, way to waste my time and to move the goal posts in trying to seem smart?
This is the second (in a row!) semi-incoherent 996 Forum thread that I have read today. WTF is going on here? Have 996 owners started their holiday drinking early this year (with some becoming incoherent and others belligerent)? If so, I didn't get the memo and have some catching up to do!
I'm there every day but only because I've been looking for a specific model car. If/when I find it, I'll probably be there more like once a week...
You and me both!
