Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. UOA is always a good idea as is cutting open the filter and inspecting for debris.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect debris' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect debris' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

As Lex says, if you don't know the exact date of the last change, do it.

I change the filter once a year, which is about every other oil change.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am going to have a place in Boulder do an oil change this week for my 98k mile 1999 C2. I bought the car this fall and have put very few miles on it.
The only reason I am having this done is peace of mind. The IMS has been done this summer.
Should I get this done or is it just pissing money away?
If so, do I ask for an oil analysis to look for metal flakes or other things, or is that normally done anyway?
I am having them install the muffler bypass at the same time.
Thanks all,
When was the last oil change? What oil was used?
If you don't know these answers (since it's a used car you recently purchased), it's a great idea to do the oil change now, and "zero out" one of the more important maintenance items.
Then, do it again in 5,000 miles.
When was the last time the oil was changed? Interval should be every 5,000 miles or 6 months. UOA is always a good idea as is cutting open the filter and inspecting for debris. Some people will argue knowledge doesn't change the situation but i for one prefer to know the state of my engine so that I can plan around it.
Cut open and inspect the oil filter pleats.
As for oil analysis, one test won't tell you much. I'd suggest you request the free kits from Blackstone Labs and start on your next oil change service, if you like this sort of data collection. I do.
I do oil change every 3K miles. Certainly you can go more, but 3K will ensure healthy oil even with track use. As Lex says, if you don't know the exact date of the last change, do it.
Every 3-4K or once a year.
85K '99 Carrera... have the motor mounts been replaced? If you are looking to give it some love, that's where I would start. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes, particularly in shifting.
I'm at one a year full oil change, I also have the LN full flow kit.
Car does <4,000 (kms) a year. I will be changing the nappa gold 1042 filter every 6 months.
I'd be careful where you take your car, even the main dealership here in Melbourne overfilled my oil although it was because of the full flow filter.
You'll soon find you can't just take your car anywhere...
You all are a bunch of ninnies! 3k? 4k? 1yr? 6mo?
If the motor is working fine that means the oil is doing it's job. Don't fvck with it!
15.5 years and 75k and it's still running fine. Porsche engineers know more than me so why should I second guess them? So I'm sticking with the oil they gave me.
So almost 16 years on the same oil?
My father runs an auto shop in Colorado Springs and he actually has seen engines that seized because people didn't think they had to change the oil.
If it's not broke don't fix it.
That changing oil lark is all a conspiracy by the big oil companies to get you to buy more of their crap you don't need.
I once was given a Honda that had ~63k without an oil change.
It would burn about a quart of oil on cold start then no smoke and it would pass NJ inspection.
I opened it up and found the rings "shallaced" to the Pistons. It would soften up enough to seal when hot. Also the main bearings were like lace. Incredibly the crank miked fine.
I put rings n bearings in it and plopped the head back on it and ran it another 70k with no problems.
I was impressed at how tough that engine was. It was one of their stratified head engines.
If you're inclined to test used oil, go on Blackstone's page & request a free Used Oil Analysis (UOA) kit. You can also buy DT40 (oil developed for the 996) here and get a free UOA.

I don't really care one way or the other how people mod their cars, but for the bypass you might just rob the car of power. I'm looking for more sound as well since removing an intake that didn't play nice with the MAF. Right now the most reasonable choices seem to be a Fister exhaust mod or Brombacher units.
I was running about 8k oil changes on my old Jeep for a number of years with synthetic oil. I didn't ask, but assuming the generator we're thinking about putting on our house doesn't need oil in it's lifetime, and pretty sure it uses a regular style engine with an oil sump.
I do changes on the 996 at 5k miles, give or take 300-400 (depending when I get around to it). The oil out seems fine, doesn't smell bad, and could more than likely go another few thousand miles easily. Maybe under hard use I'd change it more, but right now I'd rather not give oil companies more money.
I change the filter once a year, which is about every other oil change. So far nothing alarming appearing in it.
This doesn't even come close to keeping me up at night.
Hey hey,
Here is my update. I did get the oil change so as to re-set it and just know when I started. But the shop did not know how to install the mufflers so I just paid and went looking for a more Porsche knowledgable shop.
I found one and they are working on it now. Big bill though: new rear tires, new rear shocks because they were leaking, new spark plugs b/c there was oil in them I think is what he said, new clutch switch (in an attempt to fix the non-working cruise control), and new oil separator.
Oh and Fister muffler bypass install.
The tires are Continental Extreme Contact DW.
The bill is a kick in the teeth but hey that is why I work my tail off.
Fister is the way to go but just to clarify, it's not a muffler bypass. It's a partial bypass muffler mod. Big difference.
A muffler bypass = short pipes post cats with exhaust tips. No mufflers. Loud as ****.
If you needed rear shocks and to your knowledge the fronts haven't been done, the fronts will be needed as well.
Looks like Mobil 1 0W-40
No drone so far, they kinda quite down it seems like. I'll have to drive it more. It does sound great though, I am happy I did it. I'll send the old cans back for a refund next week.
The folks at the shop said front shock and tires look good. I will try to do a track day or two this spring so that might be the time to get tires.
You all digging on M1, but listen to the difference it made in the exhaust sound! You aren't going to get that out of some boutique brand like Gibbs or Motul
Matt, I'm in the Boulder area and need a reference to a good shop for the same reason: new car to me, not entirely sure about the prior oil change. It sounds like you weren't entirely pleased with your experience. Can you tell me where you went? So far I'm thinking about Simple or Autohaus Boulder. Feel free to reply privately if you like.
