These radiators are each fitted with an electric fan.

My thinking is that because this is a 40th Anniversary car with the larger turbo radiators, perhaps the DME is set differently from the normal C2 cars.

Using the Durametric, parked in the driveway after a drive, engine temperature hit 100c (212f) but front fans do not come on.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm having what is potentially an issue with my front cooling fans, and looking to get some insights.
I'm noticing that my rear decklid fan is turning on, while my front two radiator fans are not. I plugged in my Durametric and confirmed that the front fans are both operating (at both low and high speeds), however, the front fans never seem to come on even though the rear decklid fan comes on regularly.
Using the Durametric, parked in the driveway after a drive, engine temperature hit 100c (212f) but front fans do not come on. Rear decklid fan was on, despite Durametric reporting engine compartment temperature of 55c (131f).
What's going on here? Front fans work but are not engaging, while the rear fan is. I though the front fans were supposed to engage first, before the rear decklid fan. My understanding is the rear decklid fan is not supposed to come on until engine compartment temp is in excess of 176f, or engine temperature in excess of 216 degrees.
Front rad fans and rear engine fans r 2 completwly differemt systems and dont have anything to do with each other.
Front fans dont come on till coolant reaches 212ish degrees and a lot of times that never happens with our cars.
Rear deck lid fan is for engine compartment air temp not coolant temp. The sensor for this clips into a rubber grommet on the pass side intake. Often it is not sucured properly and is laying on the motor. So a search for threads with pics and verirfy its installed correctly.
Heres more info:Electric fans
There are two radiator modules installed in the front of the vehicle (on the jleft- and right-hand side). These radiators are each fitted with an electric fan. They can be operated at two speeds and are activated by the DME control unit whenever the following conditions apply:
Electric fan, speed 1
(Ground to DME control unit, terminal 35)
Coolant temperature higher than 96.75C or air conditioning switched on.
Electric fan, speed 2
(Ground to DME control unit, terminal 36)
Coolant temperature > 102C or air-conditioning fluid pressure switch closed (coolant pressure > 16 bar).
Note: The electric fans for the radiators are only triggered when the engine is running!
Engine bay fan:
The engine compartment purge fan rarely comes on.
From the service manual...
"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.
After-running of engine compartment fan
If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the
DME
control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds."
Here is the long explanation from the service
manual on the flashing coolant light.
"Four functions of the coolant warning light:
1. Engine coolant level too low -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)
2. Engine compartment temperature too high -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)
3. Engine coolant temperature too high -- light is lit; pointer on the right
4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty -- light flashes rapidly (1 Hz) ; pointer on the right
Note: The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously."
Thanks! So the data you posted above confirms I do have a problem.
My front radiator fans are not coming on despite a Durametric temperature reading in excess of
96.75C = Problem 1.
Rather than "rarely" my rear decklid fan comes on almost every drive. The rear fan is coming on despite a reported engine bay sensor temp of less than 176 F
per the Durametric. = Problem 2.
Im sensing two possible scenarios: (1) the Durametric values are completely wrong; or (2) the coolant is getting hot enough (216 F) to trigger the rear decklid fan but for some unknown reason the front fans are failing to engage.
Most of the time when the rear fan comes on, its because the sensor has dropped and fell onto the hot engine, triggering the fan to come on.
As for the front fans issue, thats strange. The DME should be turning those fans on at those temps.
Success! And new data.
Went out for a drive today with the Durametric, returned home and sat in the driveway. Front fans come on exactly at 100.5 Celsius. Turn off again at 96 Celsius.
Appears to be different than the values quoted above, but they work. My thinking is that because this is a 40th Anniversary car with the larger turbo radiators, perhaps the DME is set differently from the normal C2 cars.
The rear engine compartment fan still runs as soon as pulling into the driveway and doesn’t turn off. This is despite an “engine compartment temperature sensor” value in the 50 Celsius range. Will do more testing to see what the temp thresholds appear to be for the rear fan.
But for now happy and problem “solved.”
On the Turbo there is a fuse that can be installed that runs the engine lid fan 100% of the time. It is installed in all Turbos so far as I know. Is there something similar for the Carerra?
