Reported cause
My Boxster generated a P0430 every once in a while and it was due to a loose converter brick in the exhaust.
Leading evidence: 'loose converter brick in the exhaust' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'loose converter brick in the exhaust' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

While the error appeared infrequently and I managed to get the car through smog a few times I got tired of the knocking when cold and buzzing when hot and replaced the original exhaust manifold.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

01 Carrera with 75000 miles.
IMS bearing replaced at 70000 miles (original IMS bearing started to wobble).
Replaced AOS failure at 75000 miles.
Now check engine light is on: "Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold Bank 2"
What is this? Is it something that I could remove and replace? IMS bearing and AOS were performed by local Indie shop.
Just in case someone ready to have the IMS bearing replaced, replace the AOS also (since the engine is out). I might have missed this information, had to pay twice for the engine removal
thanks
Most likely your bank 2 cat (passenger side) is marginal. If you have a scanner that can display real-time O2 sensor voltage, it's very easy to diagnose. It's been covered many times before here.
You can replace it with a CARB approved cat if you need to pass smog test.
Make sure they plugged the O2 sensors back in correctly. You might even check to make sure they are plugged in and in the right place...2 sensors per side and 2 separate connections. It might be that they reversed the connections. Just a thought....
I had some codes thrown from a dirty MAF (running rich, so unrelated to yours), but I just picked up this scanner at a local store. Little pricey at $100 so there may be cheaper ones out there, but I get real-time digital readouts of a big range of sensors + reading/clearing codes.

USNA1970: shiny metal flakes in oil filter...the mechanic told me that I was luck out, caught it just in time...
back to my CEL, will get a pair of O2 for Bank 2 and try to install.
thanks for infor
I'd take Ahsai's advice. Why throw money at the problem without a proper diagnosis? This is usually a failed catalytic converter and the test is simple - O2 sensors aren't cheap.
The code is usually spot on in this case as your O2 sensors could be working just fine and telling you that your cat is bad. Find someone with a durametric or a reader that can see your post cat O2 sensor voltage. If it fluctuates then your cat is bad. Simple to test. New O2 sensors could be a waste of time/money.
Ashai has it I think. A bad converter.
Probably a P0420/P0430 error code.
Porsche repair guidelines say if the above error is accompanied by any aging O2 sensor errors replace the sensors indicated clear the codes and road test the car.
If the P0420/P0430 error comes back replace the indicated converter.
I hope if you had the exhaust off the engine you handled the exhaust manifolds/converters with care.
My Boxster generated a P0430 every once in a while and it was due to a loose converter brick in the exhaust. A large chunk of something on the road I think hit the exhaust manifold and probably knocked the brick loose.
While the error appeared infrequently and I managed to get the car through smog a few times I got tired of the knocking when cold and buzzing when hot and replaced the original exhaust manifold. Since then all exhaust knocking/buzzing noises gone and no converter error code (or any error code for that matter) have appeared.

dbuckius, I just spoke to a local foreign car shop who has some experience with replacing IMS bearings. The guy said checking the filter for silver specs is the first place you will notice a failing IMSB. Pretty much what we all read on here. I just wanted to point out what he said and how it is similar to your experience with your failing IMSB.
