They changed the location of the two mounting bolts on the later years that makes it almost impossible to accomplish from the tranny side of things.

I'd really be swapping out parts if that engine was a clean drop!

Should also unplug the fuel line and brake vacuum assist hose from the engine (simple quick disconnect).

If I go the route and replace the IMS myself, I was curious to know if the AOS is easier to access with the transmission removed?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I go the route and replace the IMS myself, I was curious to know if the AOS is easier to access with the transmission removed? Meaning, do I still need to have all this frontal access with half the intake removed or am I going to be ok just from the back? Also, what about the coolant reservoir for replacement; is that any better? Thanks for the feedback! I am getting all my plans in check for the upcoming summer months. Chris

POST 2Original post

here's a good write up... http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti..._Separator.htm

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's really a good write up but I am curious about the back of the engine. There is some great information in that article which will be useful.

POST 5Original post

I've done it with the tranny removed and worked only from the tranny side to remove the AOS without touching the intake. It was still not easy. It would have been a lot easier if I had had the engine lowered for a couple of inches in addition to the tranny removed.

POST 6Original post

You would have more access with the tranny but I think the bigger access is gotten if you lower the motor say 4 or 5". Be-careful of the water hoses stretching too much though.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahsai/Pete - thanks. That's exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. No problem with the engine drop, going to do the mounts anyway so I can incorporate all that into the mix of work. I think I may go this route and battle as much of the preventive repairs and replacements while I am in there. I like to go overboard I guess. Chris

POST 8Original post

Cool. From memory, it's better to unplug the O2 sensors and watch all the hoses (power steering and coolant). Should also unplug the fuel line and brake vacuum assist hose from the engine (simple quick disconnect).

POST 9Original post

On Mk1 cars , before 2002, removing transmission should be enough. On my 2004 i had to remove the driver side intake to get to the bolts to put the new one in. They changed the location of the two mounting bolts on the later years that makes it almost impossible to accomplish from the tranny side of things. Ahsai has a good write-up if yours is a 2002 and up model.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was trying to figure out if I could add a signature but like you I have a 2004 - it's the 40th AE. Guess that makes things more fun with the AOS!!!

POST 11Original post

I did all the work you mentioned but not all at once. As I have posted before, if I were doing all of this at one time I would drop the engine. Both the AOS and the coolant tank are a struggle with the engine in the car, whether trans is in or out. My opinion.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jim, I was thinking the engine drop would make the most sense. I do have a four post lift in my garage and had been researching this...I am at a point though where I think even if I remove the exhaust the engine will not clear the ramps which kills the spirit! I was hoping to go all the way with this but everyone with there on floor engine drops is my last resort as I was hoping to simplify. I have the car stored at another location so I cannot take all the measurements now as I'd like so a plan B came to mind if I did what I was asking above. I'd really be swapping out parts if that engine was a clean drop! Thanks! Chris
