Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 4Original post

Awesome! This is on my list of things to do while I’m not working during December. I have everything I need except time...and a little motivation. Yes, you have to Dremel it out on top. You can see it has been Dremeled in the 8th picture. The 4th picture is pre-Dremeled.

Same here. Its been warm as well for December but I just don't drive it in the cold enough to get motivated. It doesn't really look like that bad of a repair from the top.

POST 7Original post

You don't have access to the second blend door from the top, I believe. There are 2.

POST 8Original post

POST 10Original post

Thank you for posting. I thought a rodent got into the HVAC and chewed up the foam that annoyingly shoots out.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Correct, but if you fix this one it totally fixes the heat/cold problem.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 16292916

Correct. access to the second door (which also is covered in that crap foam) you can only get to from the dash.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To sum up: 1. Blend door under the heater core is the cold/heat temperature? 2. Other one is air between defrost, dash panel, and floor. Do I have this right?

POST 18Original post

This is a game changer! I thought the only way was to remove the interior front console/radio/AC surround and dremel the front of the blower unit. I'm still not clear on how the tech got the blend door out of the heat core compartment. Please clarify. Thank you.

Once you dremel off the top of that cap, you can pull the cap out, then the door angles out of the box.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16293246

Remember the door under the heater core is for the cold/heat. The other door, accessible from the inside is for where the air goes.

POST 23Original post

so is that the one pictured in the Op? My 996 only has luke warm heat and if it's accessible from above that's not too bad to do

just talked to my Indie, and yes you do have to remove a screw from underneath the dash, just one screw.

POST 28Original post

I’m the “Indy” that did the work ... I’ve done many flap fixes on 996’s, 986’s, 997’s and 987’s ... not too bad once you’ve done it a few times. You can check out all of my work at my Instagram business page at #joeslastchancegarage or my Facebook business page @joeslastchancegarage or Joes Last Chance Garage

POST 29Original post

So the problem is the missing foam and not an actuator problem?

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16294036

just talked to my Indie, and yes you do have to remove a screw from underneath the dash, just one screw.

POST 31Original post

A few more photos of a different car ... hope this helps Access point to the flap with heater core removed You simply remove this lever arm by taking out the 8mm head screw and then remove the lower flap pivot pin. The foam isn’t just a nuisance, it allows heat for the interior. If you have weak or no heat, it is likely all the foam is gone off this flap Replacement foam installed on flap Flap reinstalled

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 16294489

Can you point out which screw?

POST 34Original post

Thanks for all that. But everyone should be aware that it will give you heat back, but the blowing foam problem will likely persist from the second door.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 16295350

Eventually it should all blow out.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 16294436

Yes, missing foam. When I got my car last year I had essentially no heat. I decided to go through the front console (remove radio, etc.) and fix both flaps. This thread is where I first found the method, but there are plenty others. I posted some pics on this thread . It was well worth the trouble!

POST 37Original post

How does one secure the top hinge after you dermal off the cap? Just put tape over it or does someone have a better suggestion?

POST 38Original post

What foam did you use? And wouldn't that foam eventually fail? I've read of people replacing the foam with aluminum tape for a permanent t fix.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 16294744

Looks like the one at about the 7 o'clock position is loose and once removed would allow the arm to rotate & let the pink key/slot to release. Some one who has actually done it can confirm.

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 16299136

Correct....that is the one...see attached....and here is my write-up of the work with tips...start at post #13: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...the-vents.html

POST 41Original post

So I have a C4S side by side with a TT. The TT heats up nicely with 140+ coming out of the vents. When checking the hoses going to the exchanger, they are about 135 on the inlet and 115 on the outlet. I am measuring with a laser thermal temperature sensor. The C4S has roughly the same temps on the hoses but I have about 110 coming out of the vents. Is this conclusive that the problem is the blend door foam? Is there another way to confirm / diagnose this problem? I tried covering the air inlet below the cabin filter but I didn't see an appreciable difference. In fact, when I covered it I got so little air through the vents that it was hard to tell. I'm thinking I might attempt this repair tomorrow if I can get some feedback from the peanut gallery...

POST 42Original post

Why not just use aluminum HVAC tape to cover the holes rather than more foam?

POST 43Original post

There are closed cell foam products that will last fine, and do their original job which was to help quiet down the air flow noise.. You can also cover foam with AL tape.. I've even done double layers and used rivets to nail the AL tape in place.. (Different application but it would work here as well. )

POST 44Original post

Thanks for the post! I finally took care of my blend door below the heater core. I still need to install the battery & wipers. It was not a bad job at all. I think total time will be about 75 minutes. Next I’m going to tackle the blend door behind the radio. http://986forum.com/forums/performan...-debris-3.html

POST 45Original post

Just did this on my turbo. The blend door had a foam strip on it. I saved it and glued it onto the new foam. New foam with strip reglued on Old foam still somewhart intact but crumbles when pressed. THe foam strip was attached I have not seen this anywhere else

Leaving for Florida for 10 days tomorrow. May is a busy month so close to end of May beginning of June. You should make the drive up to Lime Rock on Sunday May 15 for the FCP euro Porsche show. Its free and its kind of like a really big coffee and cars thing!

POST 48Original post

I just did this job. The under dash work was easier to accomplish by laying sideways on the drivers seat with my head in the passenger footwell. I didnt use foam sheets to replace the old foam, I used sheets of peel and stick roofing membrane. Dumb move on my part. The foam is required to make a decent seal inside the mixing box to separate hot from cold. Lucky me, I get to do it again.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 18116935

That's the part I hate! I'm going to try laying on the driver's seat and see if it's more comfortable (I mean tolerable!!) I had to remove the Bose sub in the passenger footwell and the screw closest to the firewall was so hard to get to with my beat p old body! My GF just laid down and got it in a few seconds!! She's tiny though!

POST 50Original post

POST 51Original post

Quotes source post: 16294410

Without independent garages with passion and experience, with skills and intelligence, a lot of us would be unable to enjoy these cars. I have tried to do some of my own work, but without my local Indy, who is honestly a lifesaver, I would have a newer car and not a 911. I'll give you an example I wanted to put louder cans on my exhaust and so I ordered them from top gear UK and then I jacked my car up and sprayed the bolts with liquid wrench type stuff and while I was under there I noticed that my driver's side cylinder Bank had only two bolts holding the exhaust manifold on the two at the far ends the four in the middle we're gone, the heads are gone the bolts. I called my Porsche center and they said they don't do that work they would just order me a new block maybe or part of the engine so it would cost a small fortune. My local Indy is going to take off my manifolds fix the bolt problem and install the additional new headers and 200 cell x pipe cats along with the valve exhaust tomorrow. if he would not do that I would have no options so God bless you Indies. The work is not going to be cheap but at least I know it will be done right. You really have to love these cars to own one. I paid $26,000 for mine and I've spent 12K already of course some of that was optional. But a lot of it is not and I have foam blowing out my dash vents. I haven't checked the heater to be honest because I don't live in the North I guess I should. that looks like a lot of work. More stuff to fret over.

POST 52Original post

Has anyone in this thread linked to AMCPILOT's original thread on how to do this? Seems that some of the questions, issues asked here are addressed over there: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ent-issue.html

POST 53Original post

I cut out some .016 aluminum and pop riveted it to the blend door. No chance of that falling off in the future.

POST 54Original post

does removing the dash and the HVAC box require any cutting? I pm'd you Indy, thanks

POST 55Original post

I have had the pleasure of attempting this repair. I'm usually pretty handy but this is kicking my butt. While trying to line up the blend door with the pivots, I dropped the upper pivot into the outside body cavity. It has disappeared. Does anyone know where or what part number that would be?

POST 56Original post

So I finally tackled this on my 997.1 Turbo last night! The hardest part is I'm 6'3" 200lbs and 69 years old! Definitely takes a contortionist with a good back! I was actually able, though very difficult,to replace the foam on the heater door while in there from the Frunk after removing the blend door. I inspected it closely with a small mirror and that was where most of my foam had come from. I cut small rectangle pieces and was able to reach around the corner to attach them, only a few scrapes to my hand and arm but worth it! Afterwards checking again with the mirror it was perfect 👌! Everything is working great! Thanks to all that have posted videos and pictures or I would never tried it! The foam I used is similar to original but made from what the manufacturer claims will not break down! Blend Door USA in Applegate, MI

POST 57Original post

I just did both methods recently and found the dash entry to be easier. There is less stuff to remove, and I could cover all of the holes in both blend doors. I did both because after I had completed the dash method and still had no heat, I noticed that my heater core had been bypassed by a previous owner. I decided to remove the heater core and replace it in case it was leaking, along with the blend door to put foam on both sides. Now it works great. For the dash method, a sharp utility knife blade cut the ducting perfectly. For the heater core method, you really only need to cut off very little of the pivot cover. I started a little too deep and nicked the top of the pivot arm, but it shouldn't affect anything.

POST 58Original post

I think no. 18 on the attached page is what you need Hope this helps Mark

POST 59Original post

If No. 18 is not it, then it is not a part you can get separately and you will need to find yours or buy another HVAC box from a recycler. I just did the repair on my wife’s car. I removed the dash and the HVAC box and then disassembled the box. I bought a sheet of foam from a HVAC supply house and cut pieces to do each side of both doors. The issue with removing the box is that you have to discharge the AC to unhook the AC lines in order to remove the box. I was upgrading her car to a full Leather interior so I was replacing the dash. Removal of the dash in not as hard as people think, it just takes some time. Mire Schwartz posted a procedure for removing the dash and air box on Rennlist several years ago when he had too remove the HVAC box to reolace a leaking evaporator core.. I followed it but I found that you do not need to unhook the battery cable at the fire wall and you do nit need to remove the Fuse link module on the fire wall between the HVAC box and the fire wall. I will probably do this repair this way on my other cars rather than cutting the top and the side of the box.

POST 60Original post

Quotes source post: 19718747

#18 is not the part and it is not on that diagram, I don't know if you can even buy just that part, if you dropped yours in might have gone into one of the drain tubes in the frunk. Another possibility is a salvage yard, possibly find a similar part on a wrecked VW, BMW or AUDI. I've hear they have similar parts.

POST 61Original post
