Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
You will need to pull the tensioners and when doing so locking the cams is likely a good idea.
Leading evidence: 'good idea' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good idea' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace just the cover' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I may need to replace the oil pump housing on my 996.

When I pulled the old pump off, the shaft did move to one side, but when I put the new one on, I was able to use a bit of force and realign.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did something stupid and ended up with a broken oil pump housing. I realize there are a few things that need to come off, but do I need to lock the flywheel and cams?i dont think so but read that you do.
Anyone have one for sale? New they are about $350 which isnt too bad.

What? How in the world did you do that? That is a coolant passage way on the engine block, not an oil pump. To the left is the coolant drain plug, to the right is a coolant passageway plate. You have already looked up the part number and cost? Hmmmmm........
You will need to pull the tensioners and when doing so locking the cams is likely a good idea. The rear of that oil pump is what supports the front of the ims.
thanks for the replies everyone.
I was going to jack it up to look at something and carelessly put the block of wood too far back, wood tilted, the jack slid and I was about 1 second too late turning the jack handle to drop it.
When you say tensioner should come off, you mean belt not chain tensioners, right, hopefully? I just ordered the Bentley book as I heard it had a decent write up on it.
Kevin
No i mean chain tensioners. The chains will pull the ims off center if you just pull it off. You may be able to finagle the pump back on, but it will be a pain. if i recall correctly its the tensioner for one bank of cylinders and the ims tensioner that need to come out
Bummer! But a pretty simple fix..."jack slipped" was my first thought. I bet you won't make that mistake again! Could have been worse - good luck getting her back together.
It wasnt too difficult. All done with engine in and I think I remember dropping it down slightly. I had to replace the oil pump

Oil Pump, which is more like the housing.
i didnt lock the cams, but loosened the tensioners. When I pulled the old pump off, the shaft did move to one side, but when I put the new one on, I was able to use a bit of force and realign. Yes, probably should have locked cams but I was extra careful to not turn anything.
I didn't interpret the breakdown of the parts diagram from DBJoe996 correctly. Thanks for your reply and info. Glad it all worked out for you. No doubt you were relieved when you completed the repair and were able to enjoy driving your 996 again, it's a great feeling!
Hi kbatl
