Reported fix
I replaced my passenger door latch with a VW / Audi latch. It solved the window drop issue, but now my locks don’t work.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Got this $105 URO latch from Amazon last year, it has worked flawlessly so far, everything works just like new did 24 years ago....
Hi All,
I hope everyone is having a good break.
I've had a couple of things come up on my 996.2 C2 that I'd like some thoughts on.
Fuel/Petrol/Gasoline smell
Yesterday driving out to my folks for xmas lunch I was getting the odd whiff of petrol when crawling in traffic. When the traffic was moving quicker there wasn't a small. I got to the destination and couldn't smell anything.
Driving home there was no traffic so it was all 100 km/h (60 mp/h) and zero smell. When I parked the car in the garage I could faintly smell petrol. Standing behind the car or with engine cover open I could not smell anything. I could, however barely smell it around the filler hole. But I'm not convinced.
The tank was full when I departed for xmas lunch. No CEL.
Where's the best place to start? / where are common petrol leaking locations? I'm thinking replacing the fuel cap as Its probably original other than that I've no clue.
Internal Door hand - both sides
The behaviour I'm seeing is, from inside the car, having to pull the handle twice to open the door. It isn't 100% of the time. The first pull will drop the window but the door remains closed or 1/2 closed if you know what I mean. The second pull then releases the door allowing it to open. This is occurring on both doors but I do experience the odd occasions where the PAX door will open with one pull.
I've not had issues using the outside handle. Ie one pull and it opens.
I know there are issues in/around micro switches etc. so the following behaviour is noted
PAX window drops when 1/2 pulling the handle inside and outside.
PAX window remains down while the door is open
DRIVERS window drops when 1/2 pulling the handle inside and outside
DRIVERS does
not
remain down while the door is open.
Note: I have ordered a new driver's side lock mechanism to arrive in a week. I've ordered the Audi TT as it is the same part number and, to me, $100 vs $700 for Porsche genuine.
I've a few other queries but I don't want to over burden Team 996
Thanks everyone
Merry Xmas from Oz
Hopefully folks will chime in with suggestions on your specific issues. In the meantime can you share what part number you used for the door mechanism? I realize I'll have to do a bit of left/right figuring but it would give me a starting point. Saving money is good no matter what continent one is on!
Buy a new gas cap first. The O-ring is probably old and brittle.
Door mechanism and door latches replacement:

Do NOT go cheap on the door latch mechanism. Buy a Porsche OEM door latch. I know...big bucks but worth it. I did and never looked back. First one good for 20+ years, then it crapped out, so replacement will out live me.
Oz, you're definitely on the YELLOW BRICK road.
IMHO, it's mostly the door lock mechanism on the driver side that goes bad. Many people will point you to microswitches and even the regulator, but based on the symptoms you describe, it's the lock mechanism. 110% agree.
I replaced my passenger door latch with a VW / Audi latch. It solved the window drop issue, but now my locks don’t work.
I’m going to buy a used latch on eBay, make sure it works, then try to do the Frankenstein job on my old latch with the new VW latch that is cited on this forum somewhere.
