Suggestion

With some creative engineering, you could put just about any size speaker in the back, but if you're trying to keep it stock looking and use the factory speaker ports, then that's the problem for anything larger than 4.5" speaker.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone upgraded the size of the rear speakers of a coupe. I don't want 4.5. Can a 6.5 fit in the rear space behind the grill.

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 19816149

"fit" is relative. With some creative engineering, you could put just about any size speaker in the back, but if you're trying to keep it stock looking and use the factory speaker ports, then that's the problem for anything larger than 4.5" speaker. Why? Because the speaker ports are designed for the factory speaker mounts are integral to the side panels. In fact, you have to retrofit standard 4.5" speakers to make them fit the factory design or use aftermarket adapters. For me, I just put fresh 4.5" drivers in the dash and rear. I also added a factory 997 BOSE powered sub that is form fitted behind the rear seat. The sound is leaps better than the original stock. The OE speakers were trash when I took them out. Good luck!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19816252

So did you fit 6.5 behind the rear grills or no? I'm asking the group if you can fit 6.5 behind the rear speaker grills. If not what size did you fit with minimal modification.

POST 4Original post

On the rear its 4 Inch (100mm) with Adapter. 6.5" will never fit without cutting.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source posts: 19816811, 19817241

Actually Teilegott is right. I wasn't thinking specifically about the exact size... it's actually 4 inch 4-ohm drivers in the dash and rear speakers mounts. 5 1/4" 2-ohm speakers in the doors. That's based on factory amplifiers. But no, the dash and rear speaker mounts will ONLY accept the factory "tear drop" speaker design which supports a 4 inch driver and a small tweeter (if keeping it component style). Coaxial speakers work just as fine IMHO. If you want to retrofit a 6.5" speaker, then that will take some modification to the side panel because the rear speakers do not mount to the metal side panels of the car but instead integral to the plastic interior panels.

POST 6Original post

There is room for 6.5" or maybe even 8" speakers in the location where the factory rear speakers are. You might need to move the center of the speaker a bit but the depth is there. As @ZuffenZeus mentioned, the speakers attach to the plastic panel. A better mounting method is a good idea for good sound and mechanical reliability.

POST 7Original post

Don't worry about the rear speakers and concentrate on the front 4 speakers for your front sound stage. The rear is just fill. I'm planning a big stereo replacement and probably will eliminate the rears. The band is always in front of you not behind.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 19817641

Delete the complete OEM System and rebuild everything. New Stereo (Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine), 5 Channel Amp, 3 Way front, OEM Subwoofer Box with 2 Tang Band W5-1138SMF Subwoofer or new box with a 6.5" Woofer in it - and enjoy. The position of the front Speakers are not that bad.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19817618

This is what i was looking for. If i delete or cut out the oem speaker from the plastic grill, i figured a larger speaker could be installed behind it.

POST 10Original post

Please dont do it. Its a horrible idea and makes no Sense. If you want more Bass in your 996, put a subwoofer in it. With bigger Speaker you dont get a better sound. Change the front speakers, change the amplifier, put a Subwoofer in it and enjoy.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19817656

I researched the tangs and their specs were lower than what I expected. So I went with infinity component speakers that were cut down to fit into the box. I plan on changing the oem head unit and amplifier to an 8 channel to provide power to each set of speakers. My car has the upgraded audio option so it has two woofers in the door, not one like most. If I installed a 3 way 6.5 in the rear panels I figured that would help with any additional high notes.

POST 12Original post

I kept the factory 6-channel HAES amp and installed a factory 997 self powered sub behind the seats. All it needs is a 12V+ constant, 5V+ amp trigger, ground, and line level audio signal. As mentioned before, I replaced the dash and rear 4" speakers with Kickers. Was going to replace the 2-ohm HAES door subs, but after bench testing them, they were still in good shape. Installed a "PCCM Clone" that has wireless CarPlay, backup camera, and sub output. The sound is leaps better than before.
