Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Those brown wires are likely the grounds for the three injectors on that side of the engine.
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
(Not something I have on my 2000.) If these actually connect to the chassis, and you missed it when pulling the engine, you need to check the other side of the engine because the injectors over there have the same kind of ground wire set up.
Leading evidence: 'grounds' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'grounds' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check other side of the engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Im going over the grounds with a meter (fear they broke internally, not just at the ends), and will repair/replace.

You really want to identify and repair any wiring issues before putting the engine back in.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My holiday project is to drop the engine and do the AOS/Water Pump and RMS.. going fairly smoothly, but found a few wiring issues while getting ready to put the engine back in.
the temperature sensor down behind the cats, 2 wire sensor, has a broken wire, looks like the blue/orange wire (pretty dirty) is broken. I think it has been broken, and Im wondering if the car will run with it broken (or must it have broken as party of my engine drop).
secondly, where it goes into the harness, there is another short piece of black plastic shielding with a broken wire it in. See the pictures..
any idea what this wire could go to?
thanks for any help.

Cut the stubbed wire a bit shorter, and there are three brown wires in it.. weird, and Im looking and cant find where they must have been wired to..
The blue/orange wire goes to your eng temp sensor. Will the engine run without that connected? I suppose, but why would you want to try to find out? Now is the time to fix it, when the engine is out.
You ask about another wire but I can't see it. What are the colors?
Last photo: Brown is always ground. As De Jeeper suggests, somewhere near those wires is a terminal ring with the wires ripped out. Those brown wires are likely the grounds for the three injectors on that side of the engine. Looking at the wiring diagrams for the 04, it almost looks like the ground point for those wires are on the car chassis and not on the engine itself. (Not something I have on my 2000.) If these actually connect to the chassis, and you missed it when pulling the engine, you need to check the other side of the engine because the injectors over there have the same kind of ground wire set up.
- Can anyone confirm if ground points 10 & 11 for a 2004 are on the chassis or engine? Those ground points each have three ground (brown) wires for the injectors.
Eric, I recommend you take some time to go over the wiring harness carefully. You really want to identify and repair any wiring issues before putting the engine back in. good luck.
Thank you both. Im just trying to understand if they had been broken, but its clear they broke during the engine drop. Im going over the grounds with a meter (fear they broke internally, not just at the ends), and will repair/replace.
thanks again!
-Eric
