Reported cause
Problem was the aftermarket radio that has been mentioned here several times.
Leading evidence: 'aftermarket radio' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'aftermarket radio' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check both' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

When I did have this problem it was due to a failed glovebox microswitch that was keeping the light on.

My problem was the storage bin door that I forgot to fully close.

I haven't checked the for any disconnected wires, but I'll definitely look into it.

Unsuccessful attempt
I have disconnected my front one just to get the beep (and removed the bulb *i know that you can do it with center console but that never worked for me).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New-to-me 996 owner here.
I'd like to preface the following by stating that I have read the owner's manual and used the search function. I haven't come across anyone that has the same issue as I'm having.
When I arm the car with the FOB, the blinkers flash twice, followed by a single honk. The red indicator on the dash blinks quickly, twice. From what I understand, this indicates a fault somewhere, however, all fault triggers are closed - doors, glove box, center console, front and rear hoods, etc..
I even intentionally caused a fault by leaving these compartments open and I get the same result.
I do not mind the audible arming, but if this is not supposed to happen, I'd like to get it fixed.
Has anyone else had this issue? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Phil
How do you know that the triggers are closed? What I mean is that while the doors, glove box, console, etc. may well be closed, the microswitch or contact that triggers the fault may have failed. Also, if you have an aftermarket radio, there is an alarm contact that needs to be disabled or you will get the beep - searching for "radio alarm" should yield suitable threads.
Pete, the battery is a couple of years old. I did question battery strength considering the close distance I need to be to lock/unlock the doors.
bal, I am not 100% sure the microswitches have not failed and I do not have an aftermarket radio...yet. Any simple way to test the switches without taking things apart? I'd hate to rip things out unnecessarily.
Maybe I should just get a new battery.
The Porsche diagnostic tools (PST2/PIWIS) will tell you which sensor is the culprit (dealership) - I don't remember if Durametric will report which zone is the problem.
I'm with you, 5CHN3LL.
I prefer the audible confirmation, so it doesn't bother that much. It certainly doesn't bother me enough to take it to the dealership.
Should I be concerned with shortened battery life with this issue?
I'd start with the front trunk latch--it's a common failure and that's what caused the same problem on my 996. I do believe it will drain the battery much more quickly if you don't find the culprit.
I had a similar problem with my 996. In my case, it was a bad door latch on the passenger's side. It had symptoms identical to what you describe, along with the passenger's side window failing to drop to clear the weather strip when opening the door. My problem was intermittent.
Take it to be tested at a Porsch Place. They will tell you which micro switch is bad (if any). Then you can DIY. For a Porsche garage to use their tester on mine they quoted me $80. It eventually cost me $70 to pin point a problem which they actually solved and fixed for me. That was inside the alarm module under the seat. The fix cured 3 seperate things that were wrong with my car. The inside lights and door lights, Locking Petrol cap and the one horn beep as I locked up. All fixed from them going into the 'special menu' part of the alarm module under the drivers seat. They discovered that the alarm module had returned to 'transport mode'. They simply returned it to driving mode and BINGO. All fixed.
Check the gas cap lid. There is a little locking pin that moves in and out. See if you can open the lid when the car is locked/armed. Other than that, as others have suggested, a quick query of the alarm module will give the exact fault. Why wear yourself out guessing? Either do it or live with it.
This is the perfect excuse for a durametric. Car is still drivable, so rather than making time to go to the dealer for the diagnosis and fixing it yourself and paying for their time, order a durmetric, diagnosis which sensor is bad and DIY.
About the same cost and you get a new tool.
Yeah, what dgjks6 said. Sorry I left that out of my post. Best purchase you can make and it will lead you directly to the problem.

Check that latching mechanism electrical cables aren't disconnected. I have disconnected my front one just to get the beep (and removed the bulb *i know that you can do it with center console but that never worked for me). Does the light come on in the frunk?
Since this car is "new to you", does it have an aftermarket radio? You likely need to remove the alarm wire from the new radio harness (since it does not support it). Look for a Brown/Blue wire from the original radio connector and remove the pin and tape it (or cut and tape the wire).
No aftermarket radio, porsche-t. Came with the factory nav, which I'd rather not have.
I haven't checked the for any disconnected wires, but I'll definitely look into it.

Okay, if it is a factory radio, you shouldn't have the disconnected wire. Loren over on Renntech sent me the info for my car because it does the honk after arming. I have an aftermarket radio installed.
Some faults - like leaving a door cracked - will prevent the alarm from arming, whereas others (like the console being open) cause the horn to sound when locking, but the alarm is still armed.
As I recall, if the alarm still arms and the doors lock, the hood and doors are off the list of suspects.
OK, I read the manual.
Quickly lock car TWICE. The doors are locked and infrared passenger compartment monitoring is turned off. Alarm will still sound if doors are opened.
Glad to have that cleared up. Thanks for the simple reminder to read the manual. I suppose I was just being lazy, but I had only ever heard on here that if the horn sounds, then you have an alarm fault.
I see this is from some time ago. Would love to hear how / whether it worked out? My 2001 996 C2 Cabriolet beeps once when locking and twice when unlocking. Also (related?) my passenger window doesn't drop when opening door from in or outside handles.
Passenger window not dropping is likely a failure of one of the microswitches in the door lock mechanism. I had the same issue and it was a relatively straight forward fix.

FWIW, my car does not beep at all when locking AND unlocking. I would have your car scanned for fault codes. When I did have this problem it was due to a failed glovebox microswitch that was keeping the light on.
I had the same beeping and it was the aftermarket radio. There is a wire in there that was grounded and should not have been. I know.... it doesn't make sense. In your case it's likely the door latch/microswitch thing. I had a window that would not drop and that turned out to be broken solder joints inside the door latch. Everyone says it's the miroswitches. I tested mine and they were all fine....then found the solder joints under the microscope.
This happened to me today out of the blue. And this was the first thread that came up in my Google Search. My problem was the storage bin door that I forgot to fully close. I noticed this solution was not brought up in this thread (I did see it on an ajacent thread). Anyways, if anyone scrolls this far down. Check your central storage door before getting into the various microswitches!
